My Cat Cory Questions About a Past Health Conditon

I had a wonderful cat named Cory. She passed away in 1999 but I had some questions about her condition that never really got answered for me. I never had access to a forum like this before.

There is alot to read here I am writing everything I remember incase there is something that may be a key point.

At the time I was 15 and I lived at home. Conditions where not ideal for my cat but we had to make due.

She was outdoor/indoor I hated when she went outdoor but she was smart and every time she went near the street she would look both ways. Anyway it wasnt under my control. I am for indoor all or safe enclosure 100%.

So she would go in and out as usuall until one day we discovered she had a wound on her body. I cannot remmeber the exact location but I think it was near her shoulders and back. I had figured at the time she may have gone under a house or somewhere unsafe and gotten scratched. It wasn't terrably bad but bad enough that it caused an infection. I do not know how long it was from when the actual injury occured to when we discovered it. I treated her with poroxide and made a vet appointment.

We took her to the vet and they started giving her medication for the injury. We had topical medication and oral. But the infection spread a bit more before the medication had time to take effect. So she had to get toobing to release the puss and fluids so she would heal internally and a cone. She remained inside after the event to heal and wasn't allowed outside till she eventually passed away.

As time went on I think a month total she was completely healed up and was back to her full healthy state but she was still not allowed outside- I wouldn't have it.

A few months passed and then the infection poured out of her skin again. We brought her up on medication again and again it subsided. This pattern continued for about a 6 month period of time.

Then the infection came back again... except this time it spread all over her body. Not her legs head or tail but her body and in different locations. And the medication wasn't holding it back any longer. We had a cone on her again hoping that it would subside... but nothing.

Eventually we let took her to a vet to say goodbye.

Maybe someone else can solve the mystery. Would it be that easy for a bacterium to become immune to medication?

I called it leprosy but only her skin was affected. She never had any of the other side effects of the disease like lung infections or eye problems.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hello and welcome to Auspet. I am so sorry for your loss. I've lost cats myself and each time it is so hard. Your cats death could have been caused by so many things. The only way to have an answer would be to have done an autopsy on her. Have you talked to your vet about what they think may have gone wrong? Again I am so sorry for your loss.

Wow Mary it seems like this hit the nail on the head. All the symptoms are there. I just wish I new more at the time. Thank you for the link I dunno why but having more information on it just makes me a bit more at ease about the whole thing.

Hey Chess thanks for the /welcome ^^ I do no know exactly what was said at the vet. I know that when I was just with Cory I was more calm but at the vet I felt very emotional and frustraited. I do not remember the various conversations just that it was an infection.

    Thank you both so much!
