I am a first time cat owner. we have had Barney for 1 year and he has been fine. for the last few days he has been meowing once in a while rela loud and kind of like he is in pain. My son(his best friend) has been in australia for 2 weeks and i just thought the cat missed him. just now he meowed again like that went into the other roon and was trying to throw up. he finally did and it was long and brown like a stool. of course it is saturday afternoon and the vet is not open. i checkec his litter box and ther deos not seem to be much in it since it was last changed. do you think he is constipated? what should I do?

    thank you

Is your cat eating and drinking as normal? If so it could be a hairball, at least your description sounds like it. If I were you I'd continue to keep an eye on him to see if he'll use the litterbox and to make sure he doesn't stop eating/drinking.

Maybe there is an emergency vet in your area that you can call for advice?

Sounds like a hairball to me too. Exactly what my cats' hairballs look like. If he still seems off, bring him in on Monday for a check-up.

I agree that it may be a hairball. Sometimes I have to examine the hairballs in my house to make sure they're not stool.

I hope the cat's okay. If the cat's still sick when the vet's open, it never hurts to give a call.

I'd get some Petromalt, or other hairball remedy. That usually does the trick. And perhaps switch over to a dry food geared for hairball aid.
My mother's cat has a horrible time with hairballs (long haired) and she gives him PetroMalt once a week to keep them moving to the end where they should be.
    Hairball upchucks are GROSS!!!!

Do you groom him on a regular basis? It will cut down on the furball formations. It's summertime in my area and our cats are shedding and coughing up furballs like crazy. How is he doing now?

I'm waiting for an update too. I also think it's a combo of missing your son (the crying) and hairballs (puking).

As to the crying, when hubby leaves for work (he's a truck driver and gone for days) and I'm sleeping, sometimes Booger forgets that I am home and she'll cry. I call her name from the bedroom and she comes running in and is fine then.

My mother in law's dog (RIP) used to cry all day long while she was at work too. Pets really miss the person they are attached to when they're gone.

I also agree to watch kitty's eating/drinking/pee/pooh habits. The vet will surely need to know this info.
