My cats litter box habits

Ok I don't know if anyone remembers this or not but a while back my cat didn't want to use the litter box anymore (she was peeing right beside the litter box) so I tried all sorts of things I took her to the vet, he said she was healthy, I got a new litter box, a bigger one a smaller one, one with a lid one without, moved the boxes around the room, switched several different litter types, clay, clumping, silicon (or whatever that is) nothing I switched her food dry food, canned food, different brands I couldn’t figure it out. But as the weather got better we had to open up windows (we don’t have air conditioning or fans) and she would sneak out and now I just let her out sometimes bc she would have surprise break outs, where she would wait for us to open the door run as fast as she could and through a small hole in the fence to my neighbors yard. But now that she goes outside, she doesn’t pee on the floor anymore. I think she runs to my neighbors yard and pees and comes right back inside now. So now I want to ask if you guys think she was just protesting before bc she wanted to go outside so bad (bc she still peed in the litter box, just not always) And now when I let her out she is gone for a minute and then runs right back to the door to be let in. I really don’t like to let her outside because she was hit by a car before, but it seems to be the only way to keep her from peeing on the floor. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks sorry for babbling, and since you have listened to me so long here is a treat, pics of Dale!

First off your kitty is absolutely gorgeous! What a face! My kyttyn's favorite spot is on top of my computer too! She fits perfectly up there and it's just the right amount of warmth.

Did Dale used to be an outdoor cat or had she snuck out when she got hit by the car?

If she was an outdoor cat, and the behavior with the litter box started when she became an indoor cat.....and stopped when she started going back out again....my guess would be yes. I've heard others say that cats don't do things in revenge but this just seems like too much of a coincidence.

I have 4 outdoor cats. One of them, Yoda, stays outside all day long and, if I don't let him out, he'll pee somewhere in the house...I swear he's doing it b/c he's mad. There have been times in the past where he's asked to go out and I've said NO....he's peed right in front of me! (I've had him checked for UTI's etc...he's just one of those cats that really likes being outside) I've gotten to the point now that he goes out whenever he wants. He's the only one I let out after dark because all he does is hang out in the front driveway anyway. He comes in when I go to bed and I've had no "accidents" since.

I can understand your concern letting Dale out. I have never tried this but have you thought about harness training her so you can take her out? Sorry...this is the only suggestion I can think of....

yea she was an indoor cat, since I have had her, I found her when she was a kitten (maybe 6 months old or so) outiside, actually she walked into my friends house when the door was open. She moved here with me in Feb and it didn'T really start until June or so, when the weather got warmer. The time when she got hit, I had just moved into my (last) new apartment and the windows didn't have screens and if they weren't locked, then the windows wouuld fall (I didn't know this at the time!) so she snook out while I was at work. and my neighbors found her in the middle of the road, She wasn't hurt or anything, just a little shocked. Oh yea thanks for saying such nice things about DAle (I think she is pretty too)
That sounds definitely too much like a coincidence with your cat! Thanks!

Dale is such a cutie! Our neighbors cats started doing their business outside the box when they worked long hours outside the home. When they came back, the'd find poop smears on walls, doors, and hallways. The vets said they were stressed, but otherwise healthy. They are such good communicators.
