My kitten has an URI, could it be also something else?

Hi, I recently adopted a 5 month kitten from the local ACAC center. They had her spayed and vaccinated against rabies, panleukopenia, viral rhinotracheitis, calcivirus and my vet said they should have done a worm prevention, though it does not show on the papers they gave me.

One week later (Sunday), I noticed she was a bit more tired and sleeping more. She drank and ate normally and her bowel movemnets are normal. Monday, she was even less active and ate less and drank less; she usually usually uses the litter to poop 2-3 times, that day she only went once, I decided to make an appointment for the vet Tuesday.

Tuesday the vet said she most likely had an upper respiratory virus and gave me Calvamox, 2-3 times a day. She weighed almost 3 lbs. She didn't seem to eat that day and urinated once or twice, poop was normal.

Wednesday she threw up 3 times a yellow mucus, I took her to see the vet and he said it could be she was having a reaction to the medicine and gave me regular amoxil and nutrical, and he gave her fluids there and an antibiotics shot and one to induce appetite, one to stop the vomiting, and took blood for the FIV and FELV tests. She urinated twice and very little, normal poop but still would not eat, vomited once during the night and started drooling excessively. She lost 3 ounces of weight.

Thursday morining she did not vomit again but she was still drooling excessively, no drinking or eating either. I gave her amoxil at 10 am and she did not vomit. I took her back Thursday to get more fluids, the tests were negative, he checked her again, gave me Prescription diet a/d canned to give her with syringe. He injected something to help the drooling also. He will try to run some more tests with the blood. She lost one ounce of weight.

The rest of the afternoond she seemed pretty okay I gave her the canned food with the recommended dosage, she seemed pretty fine, she got up and went to drink some water on her own. She even licked the canned food in her dish a bit. She purred a bit when I petted her head. She went to the litter but made poop that was not diarrhea but soft and urinated normal.

By late afternoon she seemed to not want to drink much again. The drooling seemed to want to come back at times though not as excessively, at 8pm I gave her amoxil and she drooled a bit but afterward was fine. I gave her some nutrical and canned food. A few hours before the amoxil, she tried to pee on the couch, so i put her on the floor and she seemed at a loss to where her litter was til I put her right in front of it for her to see.
She went to the her litter andurinated, then a few minutes later she went back to poop; the poop cam out diarrhea, I tried to see if it was dark and I think it was a bit darker, like the color of the nutrical. She came back and slept more. I put some water in front of her and she drank it on her own. I gave her some more canned food. She is still sleeping.

I am wondering, the small bit of drooling after the amoxil, is it normal reaction? Should I change medicine? Is her behavior and everything else signs of another illness?
I remembered that on Sunday last, the landlady sprayed her gardne and area surrounding our house with somethin that smelled really bad, she apologized and tried to make it go away, but it stunk all the apartment up. The smell didn't go away until late at night. Could the cat have been further harmed by this?

We also have a few house plants and I didn't know most plants could be poisonous to cats and just got rid of them Wednesday, I am planning to take pictures of them from their new spot in the landlady's garden and take them for the vet to see, since Camilla sometimes played the leaves and even bit them once or twice. Also I used Simply Green spray sometimes for cleanups on the floor and don't know if it might have affected her. I told the vet all this and he suggested a shot but I am not sure he gave Camilla the shot. Should I see another vet?

Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

 

find another vet....he's giving this cat all kinds of meds on a "might be" situation?
Get to someone who can say "it is", rather than it "might be"

 

I went to the veterinary hospital near my home, and they also say that the cat had a bad reaction to the Clavamox. They gave me Baytril to give her with the Amoxil. They found that the shelter I took her from hadn't put de-worming on her papers, so she probably was not dewormed either. She had a de-worming today and more fluids. Hopefully she'll start to get better. Thanks for the help.

 

careful w/the Baytril it can cause blindness in kittens. In rescue we won't even give kittens Baytril.
Clavamox can be tough on tummies. I had a foster that couldn't handle it so I had to cut her dosage in 1/2 and it did take forever for her to get over the sniffles.
Hope your kitten gets well soon. Something I also do with sick cats is give them Pedialyte to drink instead of water

 

Hey., thanks. I'll buy the Pedialyte and give her that. The Baytril is a quarter of the tablet every twelve hours.
Today she seemed to want to eat her dry food but then she started sniffing at it like she couldn't smell it. The canned food is alright but she doesn't show much interest in eating it on her own. If she wants to eat and can't smel, I don't know what kind of food she would be able to smell and eat. I read somewhere that I should sprinkle some garlic but would that be okay? Or should I get some other food? Her dry food is Meow Mix.

 

i hope your kitty is feeling better. sometimes lots of food changes can upset their tummies. maybe chicken baby food, make sure it doesnt have any onion in it. or boil chicken and plain white rice and put in blender to pulverize the rice. or mash it. sometimes that helps because its very bland, rather than trying new foods while they are sick. once she is feeling better you can introduce a new food slowly. maybe even mix the new food with the chicken. just a thought.... :m10:

I have been giving her chicken baby food and water. She's gotten much better now; she's drinking and eating water on her own, the sneezing and leaky nose and eyes have practically stopped, sometimes she might sneeze though it's not every moment she's awake like at the start of the illness. I'm still watching her for signs that it might come back but she's much better. She's regained her weight and is walking and playing. I can't get her to eat as much dry food as before, she seems to have taken to the baby food too well and still wants it from time to time.
