I have a hamster already, (syrean) (female) a couple of months old.

I get a male, (in a seperate cage of course), not planning to breed, and he is facinated in my female. i put them together for about 30secs, and she is trying to kill him.

I had them both on my arm earlier, and she bit him hard, and as i pikt her up off him, he came up in her mouth, sqweached loudly and peed everywhere as she let him go.

    he is 6wks.

Is this coz of the age gap and the fact she was the only one for so long?

He just wants a pal to snuggle to sleep with i rekon.

its was upsetting watching marble (female) go for him everytime!

    It's probably because she's older.

Syrians tend to get aggressive when older. If they are housed in the same cage when young (ie litermates) then you have a chance of keeping them together. The only reason pet stores can keep their together is because they're young and haven't become aggressive yet.

I believe syrian males become sexually mature at about 6 weeks so that would explain the fascination with her. Since syrians ovulate about every 4 days it's probably best not to keep them together at all.

If females aren't receptive (ovulating) then meetings with a male usually end in fights because the female is not ready to breed yet.

I would not put them together at all, it takes less then thirty seconds for them to mate!!

oh dear god, theyre rapid aren they!

iv shown them each other thru the cage before. i had him out and he was clung to her cage and she was licking him!

i dont want them mating, it would be cruel coz i wdnt b able to look after them, but i thought they cd b friendly at least!

i didnt realise they get aggressive as they get older!

marble hurt her foot today, i dont know how, but her toe was bleeding, her cage has been cleaned and she has a clean areato live in, i think she may have hurt her foot in the kitchen, but she has no prob walking. will she help it heal?
