My Parakeet trusts me, but I can't get her(?) out of cage...

  1. I want to know if anyone can help me know how to train my bird to get out of the cage on my finger. I worry I may have done the wrong thing and it is too late. Though she is only about 4 months old.

We've had our parakeet, Zoe, for about a month. She's getting used to the place. Has a nice big cage with rope perches, toys, swing, and even a swing in the window facing the bird feeder (4 feet from where the chickadees and wrens feed, bird's eye level).

But I can't get her out of her cage on my finger or a stick. She always hops to another perch. I tried removing all the perches one at a time a few weeks ago, as she hopped to them, but she ended up on the floor of her cage and wouldn 't budge. I realized this was not a good approach, so I've been playing with her on her own terms now. She sometimes sings with us and takes an interest.

Zoe is getting around on clipped wings more as they've grown out. She can now fly across the room but not gain height. She can fly from her cage to her window swing. She gets the our fingers from outside the cage and we can kiss her head and wings.

Everything is great except I don't know how to get her out of her cage upon request.
