Hello, I have a 4 month old Aussie and lately she has been being a brat. When I am at school, my mom's b/f takes her potty and stuff and she is usually really good about coming in when he calls her. But yeaterday she was pacing inside all day, whining and barking and she would scratch on the door. When he took her out he had to chase her down the street twice. I thought maybe it was because maybe she missed me but today I haven't left the house once and she is still pacing with the whining and barking but she hasn't been scratching on the door. I don't know what is wrong with her and why she is acting like this... If anyone can give me a possible explination for all this please let me know... Thanks

    Ashley

    Maybe she is in heat??

Maybe she is just bored. How much daily exercise does she get? Maybe you can increase her exercise and see if that helps or give her a kong to keep her busy. If it continues despite keeping her occupied, it would'nt hurt to have a vet check her.

I was thinking that too but she is only 4 months old, when is the first time a pup goes into heat? It seems like it would be around 6 months of age

Well... usually she goes for daily walks but she just had parvo and I was told she couldn't leave the yard for 3 days but after that she could go for walks but not to parks or anything where a lot of dogs have been for 3 weeks. So lately she has been going for short walks almost every day.

Ah, okay did'nt realize she previously had parvo. Maybe a stuffed kong or a buster cube would help then if you can't walk her like you previously were.

Well about the heat thing... When is their first heat usually?? Could this be heat?

I thought they go into heat at 6 months old...but I guess there can be exceptions. Is she bleeding?

Dogs usually come into their first heat around 6-10 months of age but this can vary depending on the breed and size of the dog.

Well I looked at her vaginal area earlier but she has long hair and I couldn't really see and she was squirming lol I will try to look again but I am eating right now, not pleasant :) I don't know if you can tell me about what age she would start because of her breed, but shes an Aussie and she is about an inch or two above knee height right now...

In general, dogs tend to have their first heat months after they reach their adult height and weight. Small breeds grow for a shorter period of time so theirs would tend to be earlier than larger breeds. I'm not saying its impossible, but I think the chances of your 4 month old aussie being in heat right now are slim IMO.

Well I would say she is probably 1/2 - 3/4 of her adult size, maybe she is just bored and missing the excersize she used to get. She will be back to normal soon though. I want to get a Kong but Wal-Mart didn't have them so next time I have a chance to go to the pet store I will buy one... What is the best thing to put in those?

You can put canned dog food in them and freeze it...if you'll be giving them often I would probably do this. I've put peanut butter mixed with dog food & treats and cream cheese mixed with treats in for my dogs. I was going to try canned food the other day but I was camping and could'nt freeze it...figured it might be too messy and too easy to get out unfrozen.

The kong website has recipes too:(click on tips and advice at the top)

A great thing I put in ours is plain yogurt and canned pumpkin mixed together. Then freeze it so it takes them longer to eat. The yogurt is good for them and so is pumkin....it keeps their stool firm. Make sure you use plain canned pumpkin and not pumkin pie filling.
