my sister's older dog

My sister sent me this message today about one of her older dogs. I'm thinking the dog is somewhere between 10-15 years old.

She asked me in another message if ice or heat would be better. Anyone know? I also suggested glucosamine/MSM supplements, but that would take some time to make an improvement, right? Can someone recommend a less expensive source of glucosamine and MSM and give me a dose? Can a dog take the human pills? It seems to me someone here mentioned using a horse supplement...?

Ark Naturals puts out a great product called "Sea Mobility", it looks like little jerky strips, a bit softer and my dogs love them..highly palatable! They have sea cucumber (excellent source of chondroitin, necessary for the repair of cartlilage, and to aleviate inflamation), MSM (for connective tissue health, reduces inflamation and increases flexibility), and Glucosamine HCL (helps repair and maintain healthy cartilage, inhibits inflamation and stimulates growth of synovial fluid for joints lubrication).
Each strip contains 1000 mg of sea cucumber, 200mg msm and 200 mg of Glucosamine. They recommend 1 strip a day for 50 pounds of weight. They alsoe bags for smaller dogs.
They also have a product called Joint Rescue you could check out.

We have another product called Happy Hips..I cannot remember who puts that out off hand, google it..it's actual chicken breast strips...but with the same idea..and would be better for dogs who have issues with wheat flour or corn syrup.

If it's an injury...ice for the first 24 hours..then alternate ice and heat. If it's arthritis, I'd go for the heat...but I am not a vet, just a person who had back issues lol.

Thanks, Maisey! I will look into the products and purchase some to send to her. Both of her older dogs are arthritic.

Jimiya, here is a dog product and whats in it
Active ingredients: 500 mg Glucosamine, 400 mg Chondroitin, 100 mg Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), and 50 mg Vitamin C

    Daily dosage: Up to 12-1/2 lbs.: 1/2 tablet, 12-1/2-25 lbs.: 1 tablet, 25-50 lbs.: 2 tablets, 50-75 lbs.: 3 tablets, 75-100 lbs.: 4 tablets.

this is what I did, because Jake is 100# because I would be spending $50 a month alone so I just went to wal-mart and bought something with 1000 mg glocosominem 500 mg chonondtrin, and also had the MSM. I got capsules filled with granules.

It does take about a month to start working and has to be fed continously

Did it help Jake a lot, honeybears?

I started on Jake before he had a probelm, he is 8 and he just started getting a little stiff. I read that is good at this point to get a dog like Jake on it to help lucbircate the joints.

Now Wylie who I think is similar in age, but a totally different dog. I dont have her on it because she still plays and runs like a puppy.

Now for me personally, I swear by it. I am only 43 and it got to the point a few years ago, I couldnt even hold a fork/ I would drop glasses. I have run out a few times and let it ago and my symptoms get pretty bad, and it takes abuot 3 weeks to feel better.

As far as heat vs ice, here's what chiropractors suggest. Take an ice pack, wrap it in a hot, moist towel, and apply, allowing the pack to cool down gradually. Always start with heat, end with ice. The heat relaxes sore muscles and increases blood flow to the area. The cold reduces swelling of soft tissue.

The Happy Hips I mentioned does not have all three Chondroitin, MSM and Glucosamine..you need all three. My chiropractor even told me this for myself. I would try the Sea Jerky...my dogs look forward to their treat. I have heard many clients at the shop complain that their dogs hate taking the pills or liquid and some of the treats available are refused. The Ark Naturals one and one other brand are ones we have found dogs really like, the Sea Jerky is less expensive than the other.
Dooley is only 4 years old and he is in very good shape, BUT as you can see in the flyball video I posted in the other post...hitting that box repetitively and as hard as they do can cause issues over the years..I want to make sure he has the best chance for healthy joints so I give it to him. I also learned yesterday that all three of those ingredients are the kind where the body uses what it needs and then disposes of the rest..so no worries about giving too much. Although the expense would keep ya from doing that!

The ones I buy are for the larger dogs and it says approximately 22 in each bag. They come in either chicken or beef.

I meant to reply to this earlier but I forgot. I was going to tell you about Springtime. the website is www.springtimeinc.com I think. Anyways, I bought the joint health formula stuff they have (it is also used on horses). I bought it for my older dog but now she is dead now so I have two unopened 1 lb. tubs of it. I would send it to you if you would reimburse me for the shipping. I don't know how much that would be but I don't think more than $10. The tubs cost $60 each from springtime so I guess it is a good deal if you want it. Just PM me if you do.

The stuff has MSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin along with other stuff.

Eliza, you have ayoung St Benard dont you? I have heard for large breed dogs that even if they are young they benefit these supplements. Why dont you give it to him?

I have thought about it but it is not only glucosamine, chrondroitin, and MSM. It has other ingredients. I tried giving him some a while ago but he broke out in hot spots. Not sure if it was the stuff or something else. He has that really bad allergy problem so I don't like to give him too many different things with different ingredients. If that makes sense? I just have to be careful what he eats.

Eliza, I know how you feel, I have cut all of Jakes supplements except this because of his allergies and hot spots. I will take a look online to see what other ingreds are in it to see if I can use it.
