Mysterious Death

I have a 17-year-old cat who recently died while I was on a business trip. Her pet sitter found her lying on the couch, dead, with some bleeding around the head, perhaps from the mouth.

Although the pet sitter said that she looked very peaceful and there were no signs that she had thrashed around on the couch, I am still very sad that she died while I was away from home and concerned that she might have suffered.

For what it's worth, she had been eating, drinking, and using the kitty litter right up until the pet sitter's last visit.

Is there anyone on this board, perhaps a vet, who might know what could have caused this death?

    Thanks...

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Have you thought about calling a vet and getting a professional opinion on what may have happened?

:( thats horrible.... *huggles* i'm so sorry...

calling the vet is a good idea, there is tests they can do if u truly want to know.

if u have any poisionous plants in your home, mary's right coulda been that, or even some kind of chemical or food she got into.

also, cats can have the same medical afflictions humans do, it may have been a stroke or something of the like...

    hang in there...

I'm so sorry. *hugs* Perhaps she had a ruptured aneurysm. I'd have the vet perform an autopsy if she were my cat. I'd want to know exactly what happened.

    Thanks

Thanks to all who replied. Regarding an autopsy, she had been dead at least 12 hours when I returned home. I was in shock at the time and the pet sitter suggested having her cremated, which I did.

I think there is very little chance that she got into anything poisonous since the apartment is pretty well cat-proofed. Also, she had made it to 17 and had travelled throughout the country with me without managing to ever ingest something even mildly lethal. I don't think there was a lot of blood when she died.

As I said, though, she did die on my couch and lthe sitter said she looked very peaceful, which would seem to indicate that perhaps she died suddenly. I hope so. My major concern is that she didn't suffer.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

But think of it this way, even IF she did suffer she's free of suffering now. And I'm sure she can see how much you care for her. Keep her well within your thoughts and there will never be any more suffering for her.

I sort of know how you feel. Yesterday was my birthday and i came home last night from visiting my sister in SC to find that my pet rat Scarlett, had died while I was away. I knew she was getting old and the time was coming soon, but I wanted so much to be with her when it happened. I just didn't think it would be so soon. I wish she could have waited til i got home. She seemed perfectly fine when I left. It looked as tho my 3 other babies had tried to bury her with litter. She was just laying on the bottom of her cage looking all peaceful laid out on her belly with her eyes closed like she was sleeping. I cried myself to sleep all last night. I have to bury her today and I'm not looking forward to it. I'm just glad I took the time over the last several months to get a bunch of pictures of them all together, so I'll always be able to look at her adorable face whenever I want and remember how happy i was to have her. I'm sorry we both had such rough coming home experiences.

Do you think the pet sitter could have murdered your cat?

that is an inappropriate comment. if someone trusts a person enough to have them sit for their animals...it is very unlikely they would do something like that. your comment is offensive in my opinion.

Am I the only one that thinks that 17 is quite a ripe old age for a cat? If it were my cat, I would simply assume she died of old age, heart failure.

I'm so sorry this happened to your furbaby Cris, especially while you were away.
