Hi I'm usually in the bird section, but I have a question. I am getting a female German Rottweiler and I heard it's name has to be a cross between the mother and fathers registered names. Is this true. I don't have the parents names but I am trying to get the breeders site so I can find out. Thanks in advance.

as far as im aware it can be whatever you want it to be. usually there is a theme. for example, my cats breeder names her cats after minerals! my cats name is karocoons ilmenite, aka pepe.

From what Ive heard a lot of people like to keep the bloodline name in the official name, my friend had a Mastiff whos sire was top of his breed at a big dog show a few years ago so she gave the pup this really long name, but at home he was just called Boo....which wasnt part of his 'stage name'. I did the same with GSD I had about 20 or so years ago, he had the bloodline name as part of his papered name but at home he was Vega. Ive never heard of it being compulsory though.

(that said I dont know much about the do's and dont's of registering dogs)

You can name your dog whatever you want, with one exception. You may not use a registered kennel name unless it's your own.

For example, if you buy a puppy and want to name it "Sugar Baby's Phydough", but Sugar Baby is a registered kennel name, you can't use it. If you buy a puppy from Sugar Baby Kennel, and they allow you to use the name, then it's ok.

Hi i am not aware of the pups having to have a pedigree name that is crossed between the other and father.

One of my Dam's pedigree name is Darkstar and her pet name is Mitzy.
Her mothers pedigree name is Duchess Tara of Kent and her pet name is Tina, Her father is Count Dragma, Pet name Max.

The pedigree names are given so that if ever these pups are bred from there parents and grandparents will appear on the pedigree papers of there litters when they are registered.

When the breeder registers the litter he will give the kennel club the pups pedigree names but the new owners give them there pet name.

When my parents got their GSD, it could be anything, so long as it wasn't already another dog's name, it wasn't a registered kennel, and it had to be three words long.

Wow! I got a lot of replies, thanks. I know someone who has a registered minature dachsund and his registered name is Sir Tova Mkie and his pet name is just Kie. So a dogs pedigree name will just be on the papers but he can have any pet name, right? Give me your opinion on a name... I have these in mind: Destiny meaning one's fate, Dakota meaning Friend, Belle meaning beautiful and Jazmin I can't remember what it meant. I want to call her Jazzy so I was thinking either Jazmin and Jazzy for short or Jazabelle and Jazzy for short. I am kind of stuck on Destiny but there is no short name for it. I can't wait to get my new puppy, it won't even be born til next week but I have a little girl reserved for me. :) Thanks again!!!

If the breeder registers the litter, I think the name will already be on the pup's papers. But you get to pick the "pet name" or "call name" I think they call it.
