my 7 yr old jack russell just got diagnosed with a form of skin cancer - cutaneous hemangiosarcoma after removing a growth which burst on his abdomen. He just did a scan and xray which turn out fine but there's a slight swelling in the blood vessel at the liver and the vet suggest doing another scan next month to see if there's any change to rule out any possibility that it's spread there. Meantime they advise us to give him supplements of omega 3, vit A/C/E, immunity boosters like Transfer Factor and Protectiver as well as changing the dog food to a vegetarian one which they suggest the brand Addiction. They said if there's a possibility that the cancer has spread then we had to either do a chemotherapy or just rely on supplements. I think I'd rather he go on supplements rather than chemo which has side effects and it only prolong the life not cure it. Any advice what other food I can give that's beneficial to him?

oh your poor dog, I have not heard of the Addiction brand, is the vegeterain supposed to be better for dogs with cancer??

Flaxseed oil is also suppose to be very good, I would ask your vet about it, hree si some info
Flaxseed oil is rich in Omega 3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids which are protective against degenarative disease and illness, including bone and joint problems. Flaxseed oil is also excellent for the skin and coat and helps to support the immune system. Solid Gold Flaxseed Oil is cold-pressed and hexane-free. It contains a natural rosemary based antioxidant

I have a friend who treated their 5 year old lab with chemo, even though he has been cancer free for almost 5 years, they said they would never have done it because of what the dog went thru, the side effects were horrrible I am still on the fence if I wuld have it done for my dogs should they become sick.

I would think positive about the next scan, I got a scare with my dog, she had pancreatitis and they did an ultrasound of her stomach and saw womehting on her spleen, said its got to come out, but if you want ot wait a month, lets see if it rows, well after a month, she had anohter ultrasound and nothing was there, and another one 6 weeks after that and still nothing, so now they think it was just a blood clot that disolved itself

While cutaneous hemangiosarcoma usually has a better outcome than hemangiosarcomas that arise on intermal organs, it's a pretty aggressive type of tumor. I know we just went through it with our beagle. He had an hemangiosarcoma on his spleen, and nearly died during surgery because it ruptured.

The life expectancy for internal hemangiosarcoma is something like 19 to 62 days post surgery, so we opted not to do chemo, and just decided to enjoy him while he was with us. Well, it's been 10 months, and he's still going strong, with no signs of metastesis. So I guess he's beat the odds.

We actually didn't do anything like supplements or changing his food. Personally, I think they either survive it or they don't.

    Thanks for sharing with me

Thanks for sharing. The vet did tell us about the side effects of chemo so I definitely won't do it even if it's confirmed his cancer has spread to the liver. They said just take the supplements to boost his immunity and keep him happy. I believe his emotional well being will affect his health same like humans. I was told that he should cut out carbohydrates and meat and have more vegetables and fish. I suppose that's a healthier diet.
