Need to vent - My mom is getting a new puppy maybe.

My mom just called me about how she saw a puppy advertised on their local news and she emailed the spca about it and they are coming to their house this afternoon to "interview" them for the dog. This really just infuriates me. My mom has no business getting a dog. They killed the last dog they had. They never took proper care of him. Both my mom and her husband work full time so the dog would be alone every day until 4 pm. Then maybe, just maybe, they would come look at the dog for 30 mins or so but then that is it. They wouldn't let the dog inside. They have no shelter for the dog. They do have a small section of fenced in yard but it is full of junk. And they want to get a 6 wk old puppy and put it out there with no cover or nothing, in with all that junk that it will chew on. The last dog they had they fed Walmart dog food to him once a day. No flea medicine. No heartworm medicine. My mom says she is going to change things but she won't. Everytime she comes here she complains how I spoil Indy. I may spoil him a little but I don't think you should have a dog if you don't want to spoil them. SHe complains all the time how I let him on the couch. And the smell. And how much $$ I spend on his food and vet care. WTF is she thinking. I'm just really really upset. My mom does stuff like this where she gets some idea and thinks it is great and she is going to do this and that and then it never happens and she either backs out or just barely gets by. And there is going to be a poor little puppy brought into this. Hopefully the "interviewers" will ask the right questions and not give them the dog. If they do I'm going to drive there and take it. I can't sit here and think about them doing that to another dog. The first dog was her husband's dog so I stayed out of it. But I'm not going to watch that again. I tried to talk to her but she doesn't listen. She just hung up the phone. Ok. I'm done for now. I just don't understand why people think getting a dog is like a novelty or something. Not that they blatantly abuse the dog, they just do the bare minimum to keep a dog alive. I'm going to try to call her later and talk again when I am cooled down.

Can you talk to your moms husband? or is he all for getting the pup?

Well...it's really tricky b/c me and him do NOT get along. After his dog died, he said he didn't want another dog. It is my mom who has been pushing a new dog on him b/c she thinks it will make him feel better. My mom has never been into dogs so I think it is sort of going to be his dog but he doesn't like to do anything so she will be the one taking care of it. ? I don't know. I'm waiting until I think the interview is done to call her back.

I guess my first post is a little harsh. My mom is not a mean, animal abuser or anything. We just have very different views about how to care for animals. My dog is a HUGE part of my life and I treat him like my baby. My mom views dogs as animals that she can just put outside and they will be fine.

Eliza, I would call the SPCA and tell them what you told us, except not so harsh, that please do not adopt this dog or any other dog them because of past problems, and I would call asap. t

I was thinking the same thing. The only downfall is that it may prevent them from adopting that puppy but I'm sure they will find one elsewhere if they really want to unfortunately. :(
I wish you could talk some sense into her Eliza. I would be frustrated too.

Like people above have said...call the interviewers!!

I don't understand why people want dogs if they aren't even willing to take care of it.
