Im not sure what a royal clown knife is but a normal clown knife can usually get along fine with NW cichlids as long as they arnt overly agressivve (red devil, Midas, Dovii ect.)

Yes, please do. There very well could be other species out there that don't get as large, but the most commonly available clown knifes get round 40".

40" - 4' (48") should be about the average for clown knifes.

And since those 2 sites are lumping the royal clown knifes with the regular ones, I'm guessing they're size is similar.

Also, I really hate it when sites say fish reach a huge size in the wild, but only about half that size in aquariums. If they're the same species of fish, there shouldn't be that much difference in their potential sizes (and especially not in wild caught fish like clown knifes). If there is, it's because the fish is severely stunted, malnourished, or dies early. So basically what I'm getting at is don't believe them when they say these fish only get 18" in aquariums.

I doubt that it would stay 12 inches. But with a 400 gallon tank It would sure have room to grow out. -tl
