[/b]My husband and I have just gotten a new JRT puppy. It's 7 weeks old and we keep him in a crate at night in our room to sleep in. But he whines every two hours! What can I do?

if he's whining every 2 hours... could be he needs to potty or he's hungry. Puppies generally eat every 2-4 hours when their with their mothers and usually urinate/ deficate at that time as well.

At 7weeks old he really should still be with his mother.
When he whines are you going to him or just leaving him to whine.

Responding to a puppys whine is teaching him that as soon as he cries you will go running.

You could try putting a ticking clock under his blankets this will mimic his mothers heart beat.
A heat pad under his blankets will help if he crying because he has a chill.
Making sure he is allowed out before bed.

Make sure he has eaten and gone out before bed, As Sam mentioned he could be crying because he is hungry or needs to go to the toilet.

My uncle used to breed JRT's and he used to put things in there crates like toys treats things like that but only things that they could not choke on.

Sorry could not be more help

    Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info guys! I have toys, a chew and a stuffed animal in there with him...but it's not just at night, either! It's when I'm getting ready for work or doing chores around the house where i can't watch him...I put him in there and he just whines & whines. He can still see me and all. But ever since the first couple of nigt we've had him the only way he stays quiet is to put him in the bed with us. WHICH I WAS TRYING SO HARD TO AVOID! Our other dog was never ever like that at all. I know he's a different breed and he's a lil young too, but the story about him being too young is that a woman stopped my husband one day on his break and asked him if he wanted a JRT and he was kinda hesitant at first but after he saw him he got doe-eyes for him. But what happened was that she was trying to sell him to someone else and the person didn't want it and she had to go to work and didn't want to leave him in the car or take him into work with her so she just gave it to my husband. I know he's young though. But he is getting better though. :)

Hi there is the cause of the problem.
Because you gave in and let him into bed with you when he whined he has quickly learnt, Oh i cry they going to come to me and i can get what i want which is usually to be with you.

For the first week or two a new puppy will whine and unless they are hungry, need a drink or want to go out, You should not respond to this.

Harder said than done but needs to be done to break this habit that he now has formed to get his own way.

Just gotta decide what you're going to live with and what's healthier for the dog's psychological well being.
