New kitten drinking out of my glasses and jumping on counter

I have a new kitten who always tries to drink out of my glasses. She will drink milk, water or tea. Luckily she hasn't gotten to any wine or something stronger. She will take a sip and then stick her hand in it. She always has plenty of fresh water to drink. Any suggestions?

She has also discovered she can jump on the kitchen counter. I have tried putting her down and squirting a water gun at her but it doesn't help. I am sure I have eaten my share of cat hair but I am really concerned she is going to jump on the stove when it is hot. Any suggestions?

 

Hi. You may want to purchase a cat drinking fountain for around $25-$40 dollars (cats just love these). Or if this is not an option, you can put her water in a glass cup for her. Also, try not to leave any food/drinks laying around the house unattended.

As for her jumping on the counters, every cat is different when it comes to what works in training them to not do certain things. I have always had a lot of success with a squirt bottle (not in the face). Some people have cut out cardboard that is the shape of the counters and placed double sided tape. Some cats just can't stand to walk on the sticky tape, others couldn't care less. You can also put some rocks/marbles in a jar and shake this each time she jumps on the counter. This will startle her each time and she may end up no longer wanting to jump up there.

 

My cat ALWAYS drinks out of my cups, and I cant get him to stop either. Hes done it forever and ive tried numerouse things. The only thing I can do is watch him and stop him before he can get to it. And if I have a straw in my cup he steals them. Every time I turn my back my straw is gone. Its so funny. Then they mysteriously dissapear. I found about 10 straws one day under my couch When I take drinks to bed with me and I know I cant watch my cat so he doesnt play in it, I use a cup with a lid. Like coffe mugs or sports bottles. Thats the only thing ive found that works!!! As for the counters I cant help you. My cat never did try to get on my kitchen counters although he does jump on the table but the only reason for that is because theres a window beside the table so he jumps up to look out the window. And I agree with Chessmind on his opinion, all cats are different when it comes to training them. Just try different things to see what works best for your cat. Water bottles work good for mine while im there. I spray them and they stop whatever they are doing and they will try again a little while later and all I have to do is act like im going for my spray bottle and they wont continue. But when im not home they know they can do what they want because I find my things are messed up. So they still do what they know there not suppose to do when your not home because they know that you cant do nothing about it!! But we love them anyways so we just let them get away with it :wink: I know its not much advice but hopefully it gave you a little help!!

 

Actually, I have the opposite problem. I had to train my cats to eat on the counter because my toddler used to grab their food and water. :shock: As for the hot stove, I had to learn the hard way by keeping a pot or a cover on the hot spots all the time. Milo jumped on a hot range when he was a kitten and his pads got burned. :cry: I felt so bad. Luckily, he was a quick healer and the upside was that he never walked the stove again. Sticky tape doesn't work in my household. Rene and Milo love licking/chewing on them. :roll: MyCatChaos, that's so funny about the straws! :mrgreen:

 

You could try putting some dishes of grated lemon peel on your counters and using lemon scented cleaners to clean them. Most cats dislike the scent of lemon and avoid it.
