New kitty won't eat

So, after a week and a half my kitty is starting to come out of his shell. The problem is, he still won't eat or drink much. At the shelter they told me to give him canned food in the morning and afternoon and dry food all day. When I give him canned food, he licks it for a while but barely eats anything. I've tried mashing it up - nothing helps. Now I've starting feeding him a little bit 3-4 times a day but he's still not eating much at all. He also barely touches his dry food or water. He goes hours and hours without drinking anything and when he does it's only a few drops. Half the time he won't go over to his food or water (he definitely knows where they are) but if I put the food in his bed he'll eat a little. He's really skinny so I'm very worried. I have an appointment with the vet for a number of reasons (shots, nail clipping, etc) on Friday but I don't know what to do until then. Any advice would be extremely helpful! Thanks

wet food will give him moisture he needs. Not all cats drink tons of water. I have 2 that drink little water but they also prefer wet food over dry.
As long as he's eating at least 1/4 cup of food a day he should be fine. But be sure to mention his lack of appetite to the vet when you go Friday. Maybe you should move the appointment up at least for peace of mind.
I forget how long you've had him?
Also I think he might be training you to feed him in bed. He doesn't eat, you worry and feed him in bed. So he likes that and has learned that he can get you to bring food to him. Maybe you should stop doing that.
I used to get up and feed my little fella, Zeus, at 4am cause he demanded it (and I wanted to sleep). HE did train me well LOL I finally had to just stop doing it. He eventually stopped bugging me
