OK yall, I had one of those rare moments where I actually used my brain.
Ok. so it was more of a brain fart....

Everyone with large breed dogs, knows about the leash issue... Either the leash is too long, and you end up having to wad it up in your hand, or it drags, your dogs step over it, then you have the tangled issue..

I ALWAYS keep my dogs on a short leash, and in a heel when we go ANYWHERE. So yesterday while at the hardware store. i had an idea.

I bought a piece of chain (not a huge chain, 1" links) about 1 1/2 ft long, and snap with ring on the end, and a piece of PVC rubber pipe 4" long.

I made a loop with the chain and had Granvel slide the rubber pipe on it, cut the links on both ends and weld them in the snap ring. This makes an EXCELLENT lead!! Its short. VERY durable, and comfy in your hand! And the best part, it will not break!!

I'll take photos of it tonight and post for everyone!

sam - they make a short leash - about 12-18" long called a "traffic leash".
I used one with our big golden to help him with off leash training. I would attach the the short leash. Walk around at a nice heal and then just drop the leash. He would think that I was still holding the leash! After a while, I was able to remove the leash and - Wallah!!! A nice heel off lead!
I have to admit - the short leash was hard to find. I had to go to a large feed store to get one because the local chain pet stores didn't carry them.

I have seen many people with big dogs that have a "leash" which is really just the looped handle part of a regular leash that snaps directly on to the collar.

I had a heck of a time finding a short "tab" of a leash to use with Nala when we started agility. I wanted to be able to grab her if she decided to not listen to me, but I didn't want her dragging a whole leash. I saw the "big dog" leashes, but the clasp is so huge I thought Nala's head would get tired of holding it up! I finally found what I was looking for, but I had to go to a specialty shop to find it.

I found exactly what I needed to be strong enough for my pit bulls at Petco.
    It was only $8.99
    Works like a charm.
    It is a leash tab.
I am too lazy to make one.

Thanks - I have to check out Petco. Yes, that is what I found at the feed store - it was also called a Leash Tab! I need a new one. The one I have is a beautiful leather (it was rather expensive) and because of its age and use - it's pretty beaten up looking.
    $8.99 sounds like a deal!!!
    Thanks!!

I found those, But if my girls pulled hard enough (like went after something) it'd tear the leather like nothing. I'm not really 100% about nylon either. Precious has broken one nylon leash.. I use strictly chain now.

I think I spent a whole $3 on the two leads.

    sam -
if your dogs are that powerful and can pull that hard - - how do you keep them under control and how do keep yourself on your feet ?

Obediance training. LOTS of it and I'm quite strict on them when we're in public or in places away from home.

I've been pulled across the yard a few times...

I aslo use prong collars and only walk one at a time.

Precious would be great at weight pulling. I've had her pull a railroad tie for me. Only a short distance. Maybe a foot or two.

Her father was good at weight pull and MANY dogs from her blood line are WONDERFUL at it and pull thousands of lbs. I think one dog pulled almost 3500#

Oh my, Sam! Your pups are really pullers! I am sure it takes a lot of work training them. Good for you!!!
I don't like the pinch collars - have you tried the gentle leader (I think that is what it is called)? There is a loop around the muzzle that I think pulls the head down when the dog pulls on the leash.

I am starting to work more with my 7 month old. He is very happy to work for praise (he lives for praise!!!! - and a good belly rub!!!!) -
He is great with sit, stay, come, and down - but I'm still having problems with heeling.

One of the problems may be because he is still a high-strung puppy - ready to run and explore. But I can't take him too far if he is constantly pulling on the leash. And he is EXTREMELY strong for the breed. I don't want my arm to fall off from his pulling.

Let me know what you thing about that leader collar.
    Thanks

Oh! Sorry!!! It works good. I dont' have the rubber hose on it yet for cushion. But it workd GREAT when we went to the park yesterday!

I have halti's. They work GREAT! But their aggrivating to the girls. I always carry it with me in my back pocket or my purse. Just incase Precious decides not to behave.

Kabuki doesn't need it. She's such a good natured dog. She listens to everything. Occasionally she'll get side tracked but all it takes is a que, and she's right back on track.

I've always used short leads, my favorite is this one made by EZY DOG and it's gauranteed for life. It has a bungee type action and if your dog does pull suddenly it takes the shock out of that jerk..it also has a handle like on a water ski rope....very comfy!

I have a Mongrel without the extension and a Cujo..I love both.

Hey Sams, couldn't you use that foam pipe insulator/wrap to cushion the rubber pipe?
