 Hello all were new pit owners and jsut have some general questions.
    1) How much pressure is in the jaws when a pit bites?
    2) Is there any way to tell the age of a pit by lookign at there teeth?
    3) Is there a way to tell if it's her first cycle or not?

We awnsered a ad and now are the pround parents/owners of a female pit but we don't know for sure how old she is and if she's in her first cycle. The person we got her from was really if-y about her information. And we want to do everything we can to make sure she stays as healthy as possible. If anyone can awnser the questions for us we would be very grateful

First of all, let me say welcome. I'm sure I speak for just about everyone when I say: post pics! We love pics. Now, to your questions. As for jaw pressure, there is no way to accurately measure any dog's jaw pressure, including APBTs. And in case you are wondering - no, they do not have locking jaws. As for the other two questions - your vet should be able to give you a decent estimate of her age partly by looking at her teeth. I'm not sure, but the vet may be able to tell you if it's her 1st heat or not. I really don't know. Not trying to sound rude, but why did you buy her if the seller was not knowlegable and/or forthcoming with info about her.

We did not buy her. We awnsered an ad in the paper for a free pit. The past owner has told us 3 diffrent stories where he got her from, and one was he rescued her from being fought. The day we met her she was as sweet as can be. We are a house hold of animal lovers and we were able to give her a loving home. Yes I will amit that when we got her we had to read up on the breed.

I'm not sure as to how much pressure their jaws actually have, I assume its very powerful.

Vets can usually give you a good age estimate by observing the dogs teeth and appearance.

You probably wont be able to tell if its her first heat cycle, maybe some one else has info on that, but I've never noticed a real difference. If she looks like she's been in heat before then it wouldn't be her first cycle, but if she looks normal and then comes into heat that'd be her first prbably. Unless she was in heat when you got her, then theres nothing to really judge by.

The best thing is to take her to the vet to make sure she is healthy, UTD on vaccs, dewormed, and spayed and they will also tell you about age she is and she has any health problems/needs.
