 When is a good time to start taking my puppy out to the park to socialize? He is only 7 weeks old.

After the vet gives him his final set of puppy shots. I believe it's around 4 months. Be careful not to have him walking around on grounds that other dogs have access to. Pups can catch diseases easily without their shots.

Socialization is very important especially prior to 3 months of age. As puttin510 stated, I probably would'nt take him to the park or other high risk areas until he has all of his shots but you can still socialize him by having people and healthy dogs come to your home and/or taking him places that he is at a low risk of contacting any diseases. Some trainers offer puppy socialization classes. If you can find one in your area that would be a great start for your new pup to meet lots of people and other dogs.

Check with your local Petsmart. They usually have an hour a week they call "Social Hour" - it is free.

I agree. I would have play dates with dogs his age and older that are fully vaccinated and well mannered!

I did some research on this (I have an eight week old Dane pup, and they DEFINATELY need socializing early!) and temperament tests show that between the ages of 8-14 weeks, pups need a lot of socializing and exposure if they are to become healthy, well adjusted adults. Pups that were not properly socialized within this critical window of time often grew up to be timid, shy and/or suspicious. Not a lot of fun for the dog OR the owner. I've resolved to take my pup to Petsmart, Petco and the park and for a walk at least twice a week during this time to be sure he is exposed to a lot of different animals, people and situations.

I agree puppies should get out at an early age!

 I agree that puppies should get out at an early age 6-8 weeks because that way they can get use to whats around them and not be afraid of every little noise. At that age their scared and freak out of every little noise they hear so it's good to get them used to people and noise. You want them to be comfortable around people because if not you are going to have problems with him/or her being scared towards humans!!! and possibly bitting them.
    Thanks aussylover

Something you can do if the pup does not have all his shots is to bring him out in public but carry him (ask your vet first, of course). I was told to not set him down on grass, especially where other dogs have been. You can also go places like the grocery store where it is mainly people and no dogs. You can loiter outside and let him see all the people going in. Of course, if you live in a high crime area, you need to be careful the police don't chase you off. :)
