New to this web site. Hi too everybody.

Discussion in 'Dogs - all breeds / types' started by momoftwocuteparakeets, Oct 11, 2005.

  1. Hi to all i'm new tothis web site. I have been talking to one room about birds since we have two. And we also have a dog. We got her for free from a buddy that my husband works with. She's six years old and loves my kids to death. The only question that i have is if anybody here knows what kind of dog Benji is if i spelled that right. And if there is anything out in the market that can help her from itching so bad. And how can i stop her from pulling her own hair out. The guy said that she has been doing that for awhile. Any advice would be nice. I'm not used to having a dog that pulls her own hair out.

    Hi and welcome! :m22:

Oh my! I've never heard of a dog pulling out her own hair. Is she chewing on herself because she itches? I had a little terrier that did that. Is she flea-free? What kind of food does she get?

I'm sorry--I don't have any answers here. :? I just wanted to welcome you and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in. :)

    Hi and welcome :D

I checked into the Benji breed...there isnt one, I knew the first 2 were non-specific, the one in the current movie is thought to have Tibetan Terrier/Spaniel in there but no-one is sure as she was rescued off the street by a shelter (the first Benji was also a shelter dog), heres a link though.

As for the skin, its possibly (more common) allergies, there are a lot of tests that can be done but I would take a trip to a vet and see what the vet says (could be something else) they should be able to give you something to stop the itching. Theres a whole bunch of other things that could be cause so if you can get any history off the previous owner that might help, like when it started, i.e was there a change in diet, enviroment etc, if he has had any meds for it in the past.

    Good luck.

    Welcome to the site.
Are you referring to a Basenji? Thats the "barkless" breed. See this AKC site:
    http://www.akc.org/breeds/basenji/index.cfm

If not then can you post a photo? Maybe someone will recognize the breed from a photo.
As for the itching there could be many causes and you need to determine what is making you dog itch. Allergies are indeed the most common cause of skin problems and food allergies probably top the list. What are you currently feeding your dog. We can give you a lot of advice based on the diet you are feeding. Let us know.

Me, neither. I assumed "Benji" is what was meant.
