i just adopted a border collie/terrier mix puppy who will be 3 months old at the end of the month. i brought home a bag of nutro max puppy (dry) food we had at the shelter and was curious what opinions were of this brand.

we have quite a few rescuers that work with us who use nutro max and love it. i personally feed my 3 cats wellness brand and am trying to decide which direction to go with the new dog. any opinions or comments?

I think it's a decent food - a step below the ultra premiums, but better than the usual pet store brands.

I think Wellness is a better food, personally.

I feed Nutro Natural choice and am very happy with it. I have heard some people talk about the Nutro Max and heard mixed responses. Some say it stoo concentrated and others love it. Try it out and see how it flys. I noticed with Harley on the Natural Choice within 2 weeks her coat was a lot smoother and her stools were much more managable.

I have to say - we just took the plunge and bought an 80-pound bag of Nutro (can't remember the type, but it was for older dogs and had glucosamine in it) - and he kept throwing up. We tried everything - diluted it more and more with his old food, but even a taste of it would make him sick. I guess some pups just have sensitive stomachs.

Natalie ate Nutro Max puppy and then Nutro Max adult for a while. She seemed to do pretty well on it.

bullylove1 -- how do you mean "too concentrated"?? not to be graphic but...ends up in the runs?

 I too switched my three cocker spaniels to Nutro Max dog food. I am slowly switching them and now they are starting to get the soft stool. They do love Nutro Max. But it may not be agreeing with them. I guess I will need to switch again, if it keeps up. I have found a site that I think is useful. The site has rated premium dog food, as well as the ones sold in grocery stores. If I do switch, I think I will go with Natura Innova or Blue Buffalo (this one is not on the site). Hope one of these will give better digesting results.
Does anyone have any opinions on Innova or Blue Buffalo?
Here is the site I was talking about.

Correction... I was feeding them Nutro Natural Choice Senior and not Nutro Max. Sorry...

I've never tried Blue Buffalo but both of my dogs did fabulous on Innova. If you think your dog might have a sensitive stomache California Natural might be a better choice than Innova because it has limited ingredients.

 Thank you! I'd never heard of Blue Buffalo, until I found their site. It looks like it contains good ingredients, like Innova. But I will try California Natural.
    Thanks for the tip!

seebr, if your dog has a sensitive stomach do not use Innova, even though it is an excellent food, it is very rich. Many people heve had mixed results either thdy did very well or they didnt. Calif Nat lamb and rice basicly only has 2 ingred - it is used for dogs with allergies, that may be the way to go. try small bags if you can get a sample to try

honeybears, thank you! I wish I'd done this prior to buying Nutro Max. I'm glad I did get on this link now for suggestions, as I would've been going through the same thing with Innova. My cockers spaniels are really up there in age. They are only 17 years old!
    Thanks again!

wow, that is great 17 years old :D

UIs the nutromax you bought a senior formula. I think that is really what they need to bon for the digestive systems and finding one tht works

Innova is an excellant brand which we use. California Natural is made by the same company that makes Innova too.
My dog on the left is what we suspect to be a border collie- JRT mix. Thats just our assumption. Does yours look anything like Rufus?
I've never heard of blue buffalo.

puttin510 -- 2 very cute dogs! he doesn't look too much like rufus. but he's still just 3 months so he may grow up to look like your dog. i'm waiting for the battery to charge on the camera so i can post a picture  anyway, he's mostly white with 2 black patches over each eye and ear with a line of little black spots going down his back. also has the little black spots all over his legs and tummy. i'll post again when i get some pictures!

Actually, many senior dog formulas have much lower quality ingredients than their "regular" counterparts. Because they have to lower the amount of protein and fat somehow (and meats than naturally have low values of such are too expensive to be cost efficient), the use more grain in the foods. You end up paying more money for more filler. There are also some people who suggest that because a dog's body is not as good at extracting nutrients as they age, lower amounts of protein, fat, etc do not help the dog in any way, because they have to eat more to get enough nutrients to sustain themselves. I've chosen a "moderate" diet for my own dog, medium levels of fat (13%), protein(23%), etc and good ingredients, and it seems to fit well with my fairly active older dog.

I have never tried the Nutro Max, but I just switched to Nutro Natural Sensitive Stomach formula and I really like it. Romeo's coat looks better than it ever has!

Natural Balance, whatever the regular formula is, though I'm considering switching her to the duck and potato for a bit to see if it helps clear up these ear infections she's been having lately (2 or 3 since around x-mastime, she has allergies, and they've contributed to her ear probs in the past, so a food change might help, and yes, we've been treating the infections, but I'd like to prevent them from recurring if at all possible), probably the next bag I buy will be that (though I have a full bag sitting in my closet that I have to use first). They also get some Nutro canned food every night, a little less than 1/2 can for Goo, it's the lamb and rice formula.
