I know this is off topic but has anyone here had their wisdom teeth removed. I woke up the other day with a horrrible pain in my mouth, my head, and ears. Luckily my mom had a dentist appt. yesterday and she let me take her place. Turned out I have two erupted wisdom teeth on my upper jaw, i never got lower ones. They were severly decayed and they fit me in for an emergancy Wisdom teeth removal. Luckily I only had two and they were not impacted so it was fairly easy. Doesnt hurt to bad but I have my wondeful meds to thank for that. I know this sounds bad but I am a smoker and I'm dying for a ciggerette. Its been 24 hours since the operation, anyone know if its okay to have one. Obvisouly i wont chain smoke or anything. I'm so bad. I'm suppose to give a speech on Monday, supposedly thats when my swelling will be at its worst, lucky me! :) Thanks

yup, you'll look like your avitar!!!!

They should have sent you home with a do and don't list and when you can do what again. I think smoking is ok 24 hrs after....but I'd be VERY limited on how many you smoke.....

I just had all four of mine removed at one time...talk about no fun!

I had mine removed a few years ago. All 4 of them. I was really nervous b/c my regular dentist wanted me to go to an oral surgeon. I met with him but didn't like him so I talked my reg dentist into doing it with just novacaine. It wasn't that bad. Lots of novacaine, and LOTS and LOTS of laughing gas. I actually started laughing during the middle of the procedure. lol. After they were removed it wasn't too bad b/c they gave me good pain meds - Tylox. :) I had to have stitches put in. Getting them taken out was the worst part b/c they didn't want to come out.

I have no idea about the smoking. I don't really see what difference it would make though.

Well all my stitches busted before I got home and I had exposed jaw bone!! I ended up with a bone infection and got really sick. They put me under for mine. THey had to litterally chissle the bottom wisdom teeth off the jaw bone. They fused! My bottom ones were too big, and had to be broken and taken out in peices.

:-& I don't know what it is about teeth stuff but I always think it is incredibly disgusting! I think dentists are like trash guys! gross!! Teeth are like one of the things the I think are incredibly dirty. But anyway I think that they say not to smoke bc smoking raises your blood pressure and that would make it harder for your wounds to heal. That is just what I think. But, for you (smoking)is it the mouth hand thing or is it the nicotine? Why not try the patch? but I think that might only be good (better) if it is the actual smoke causing infection (not saying you have or whatever, but I hope this makes sense) I only smoke when I drink and I have never had wisdom teeth, my exrays show that I won't get them, my mom never had any and her dad got his taken out when he was 60ish, so I am not so worried.

The reason for not smoking after having a tooth pulled is a condition called Dry Socket. When the tooth is removed a blood clot forms (the blood clot protects the root bed) and the drawing action when you take a drag can cause it to become dislodged. This can be very painful and the Dentist sometimes will have to scrape the gums to get it to bleed so a new blood clot can form. Not something anyone wants to experiance. The same goes for drinking out of a straw. I'm pretty sure it is okay after 24 hours. This is what I was told.

I had all of my upper teeth pulled last year due to advanced peridontal disease...4 in one sitting and when that healed other remaining 7 pulled and the dentures (oh I hate these things) put right in. Haven't had a cavity since I was 19 years old and I've gotten my teeth cleaned every 6 months since I was 11 years old - but couldn't stop the peridontal disease.

Why you ask...cause I smoke. So if I were you I'd use this opportunity to quit. I still smoke and I smoked right after having the teeth pulled.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the replies.

Mary...you are right, I should use this time to quit. I did have a couple these past two days but i think this is the begining of me cutting back and stopping for good. I use to smoke for 8 years and quit cold turkey for a year and half. Then everything bad happened it seemed all at once and I started back. When I quit agian I will never smoke agian!

Luckily I didnt have stitches and it was only the two upper teeth that were removed. I actually feel a lot better except for my throat. My throat has hurt everday since and feels the worst in the morning. This morning I woke up and it felt like there was a huge lump in my throat and it hurt really bad and makes me talk funny. My mom says this might be the swelling they were talking about since it is the 3rd day. But my throat? I thought my cheeks would swell or my mouth. Anyone experiance this? The throat hurts worse then the teeth, my teeth actually feel preety good. I can eat on the left side now!

Well thanks agians for all the replies and help...you are the best! :)

I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 18. That's the typical time to do it, because they are getting ready to come in. Rarely do people have room for the wisdom teeth, and they can really mess up all your nice, straight teeth after orthodontics! I don't remember it being too terrible - some swelling, and pain meds that made me have funny dreams. A couple days and I was better, I think.
