our decision on this Tilly thing

oh Tilly is 6.5 years old and I've had her 5 years next month.

I am getting all kinds of info from caring people here and from people at siamese internet cat club. My vet does insist FIP can be contagious. He said he's the vet and others giving me info aren't...but I am going to get a 2nd opinion on the contagious aspects of FIP. I used to take my dog to a holistic vet and I'll call them Monday for the output on that.

Tomorrow I'm taking both Zeus and Missy for bloodwork just as a precaution (what the heck....I always owe my vet $$ might as well get the bill up there).

But we have decided that we aren't going to do anything....not in the medical sense...but in changing anything here.

If FIP is truly contagious these cats have been together for years and if any of them are going to get it most likely that has already happened. FIP, from what I've been reading...if it is contagious it is through fecal and I'm majorly anal (no pun intended) about the cleanliness of the litterbox. Always have been, always will be. A poop hits the litter I'm on it. I do a fully clean every week and scoop a lot. I'm told I should consider feeding Tilly from a separate dish but I'm not sure I can fully accomplish that since I free feed. I do use ceramic dishes and have 2 sets which get rotated on a daily basis.

We'll just let Tilly enjoy her life and hope she doesn't develop more symptons. I'm still doing my homework...but that's the way it'll be. No one is leaving, no one is being PTS....I stop and think about what would life be like if I had something contagious - would I want to be taken away from my family or treated with caution and still be with those I love. I would choose to be careful and stay home - and that's what we'll do with Tilly and just keep our fingers crossed this really isn't contagious

I've been thinking about this since I read your post earlier. I'm glad you have come to a decision and I'm pretty sure I would have made a similar choice in your situation. Best of luck.

I was doing some reading and thought this link was very informative. Not sure if you've already seen it but if not its a good one:

feline health site was very informative

I went thru 2 bouts of Giardia with my cats a few years ago. I note that one of the instructions was exactly what my vet required with regards to the litter boxes, to scoop out daily and once a week to clean and in my case he instructed to bleach then refill. I have done that since and no more Giardia. Appears the bleach was very effective in killing off parasites in the fecal. Good luck with the kids.

I'm sorry, Mary. I would so the exact same thing you are doing.

Multiple households are harder to handle when things like this come up and you wonder what you should do. We do our best and I hink our kitties know what we are doing for them to help them with whatever ailment they have and they're grateful.

Best of everything to your household.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I would have made the same decision. And, I agree, if they've been together for years, either they have it, or maybe they simply won't get it.

Your cats are lucky to have you. I hope the others come back negative.
