Products for kitty allergies

A while back, we noticed that Romeo was scratching a lot and starting to go bald in a few places so we took him to the vet. Turns out he has allergies. The vet wanted to put him on an antihistimine, but Romeo is unpillable and anithistimines don't tend to go over very well with food (too bitter). So he put Romeo on steroids which Romeo takes pretty good with food.

The steroids aren't really helping a whole lot and I really don't like the idea of keeping him on steroids. So I'm looking for a good shampoo, conditioner, or spray that helps with skin allergies. Does anyone know of any that work good?

We haven't tried antihistimines with food yet because I'd rather him not have to take any oral meds if possible.

have you been able to determine what is causing the allergies?
Dixie Chick can't eat lite dry foods or she goes bald...she needs the light food but can't eat it and I've tried several different brands. They all make her lose fur on her ears and face.
Maybe his allergies are food related. If you can narrow that down he won't need drugs

 

He's always eaten the same food (Chicken Soup). Lately we have been giving all the cats colostrum (which isn't supposed to have any side effects), but I think he was scratching before we started giving it to them. Might try taking him off of it, for a while, though. The only other change I can think of in the last couple months is getting Toonces (are cats generally allergic to eachother?) but he doesn't interact with her.
