My puppy was very annoyed with us last night. When we got her, she had a bacteria infection in one ear and a yeast infection in the other, so we have to give her ear drops 2 times a day and clean her ears with a solution every other day. She also needs to be brushed every day, and have her eyes wiped to help with tear stains. We try to space all of this apart because she starts to wiggle a lot and gets annoyed. Well last night we had cleaned out her ears and then let her down to give her a break. A little while later, she jumped on the couch next to me and laid down. So I got out the washcloth and started to wipe her eyes. The hair on her legs and near her ears were dirty, so I also wiped those. She got so angry! We hadn't even given her the ear drops yet, but I let her go so she could calm down. She went right into her kennel and laid down in her bed in there. She has NEVER done that before! I couldn't believe it! We left her alone for a while and then it was time to take her outside to potty before bed. She wouldn't come out, not even for a Cheerio. She wanted nothing to do with us. I feel so bad because we are always having to do something to her (ear drop, ear wash, brush, eye clean, etc), but it's stuff we HAVE to do! I don't want her to hate coming near us. What can I do????

dont let her go next time she chucks a wobbly. unless she is getting very aggressive, keep doing what you need to do until you are finished, then give her a treat. stopping half way is like saying 'good girl for throwing a tantrum, you can go now'. if she goes to her kennel again and doesnt come out, just leave her there. dont pay her any attention, dont bribe her to come out, dont even look at her! she might not want to go near you while all the treatments are happening, but once all of it is over then i guarantee you she will forget all about it.

another thing, when you are doing everything keep little tid bits on hand and give them to her continuously [only if she behaves though]. for example when you finish one ear give her a treat, the next another treat, finish one half of brushing her body give her a treat and so on. if she squirms and runs away, no treats! i do this with my dog and it stops her from getting up and moving away. i just wish that idea worked for my cat :x

Thanks for the reply. We do finish what we wanted to do and then let her go. We also give her cheerios during (if she is being cooperative) and after. Maybe I should just do everything in one sitting instead of spreading it out over the entire evening?

I agree. do it all and get it over with in one setting. Letting her "break" is teaching her that if I thow a tantrum and be a bad girl, they'll let me go...

Reward good behavior, and MAKE her behave and take it.

she probably is just 'thowing a tantrum' but the first think i thought when i read it was maybe it hurts her? does she have a cut or anything around that area?

I also think you should do it all in one sitting and just get it over with. Maybe you could also try a higher value treat than cheerios. Find something REALLY tasty - like maybe small bits of hot dog - and ONLY give it when you are doing these things to her.

Thanks for the advise! We finish whatever we started, so I don't think we are teaching her to throw tantrums...at least I hope not!
I am going to try to do it all in one sitting and give her a new treat, like the hot dog. Great idea!!!
Oh and no I don't think anything is hurting her. The ears would be the only thing and that is the part is the most OK with.

thats considered stopping. she will see a break as a reward for bad behaviour.

lol chucking a wobbly. i cant believe no ones heard of that. i didnt think it was just an australian thing. chucking a wobbly = throwing a tanty.

    LOL!!!
I read this post and I was thinking to myself...'she does what?'
lol, I read it over and I guess I didn't read it right, I was thinking, 'what does that mean?'
Then I reread it for a third time and I understood what it meant but I busted out laughing! lol, sorry but it was funny!
I have never heard that before in my life!
I was starting to wonder if anybody was going to say anything!
