Question about cats and kittens with diahhrea

Hi! Poor Smokey has had problems off and on with his bowels practically since he ws born. He is now five months old. He has had almost all of his shots(The last one is coming up along with his neutering). He has been dewormed. Has had testing for feline aids and leukemia, and he is fine on both. A couple of weeks ago, he was running a fever of 104, so he stayed overnight at the vets and was on antibiotics for some unknown infection.During all of this time, he has had fairly loose stools. Not watery, but not firm either. When I went to pick him up after the vets stay, they said he was eating and drinking like a little pig. And his stools were ok. I get him home, and he had diahhrea again. I called the doctor, and he said to stop taking the liquid antibiotics. It's a little better, but still not firm. I wonder if it is diet related. He eats kitten dry food. I was giving him a treat of canned cat food at dinner. Does anyone think that this could be harmful, or the cause of his diahhrea? He gets treats every once in a while. Does anyone have any ideas?

I hope Smokey continues to feel better. :m10: Does he have IBD? Maybe he just has immature bowels that will become stronger as he gets older. If he's on antibiotics, the side effects can be diarrhea. Some cats also do not do well on dry foods although most do. Because of the diarrhea, it's a good idea to offer him canned foods or wet foods since it contains more water than the dry. Try to give him foods with a higher rice or potato content as it had worked on Lynnhaz's Max that used to have stool problems. What foods did they offer him at the vet? Maybe you can try the same and see what happens.

perhaps you could try giving a probiotic? The lactobacillus acidophilus that comes in liquid, gel or tablet form. I like Benebac, which is the yellow gel that comes in single dose tubes. It really helps with digestion if he just has a sensitive tummy. It's also a good thing for them after a treatment of antibiotics anyway.
