Does anyone use Flaxseed oil as a fatty acid supplement? I have been using a very expensive omega 3 liquid supplemeny but I read somewhere that Flaxseed oil is just as good. I
    Thanks

I don't know about flaxseed oil - I stay away from it b/c my dog has allergies but the stuff I use is not very expensive if you buy the big bottle. It lasts a long time. It is called Grizzly Salmon Oil. You can buy it from jefferspet.com and a few other places. It is 26.95 for the biggest size which lasts well over a month and I use more than the recommended amt (b/c my dog is so big).

From what i've read about flaxseed, its best to keep the oil in a lightproof bottle and refridgerate it or it loses its effectiveness. Also if you grind your own seeds you are sposed to use them within 24-48hrs of grinding. I use them in my dry rodent mix recipe. (I have super spoiled rats :D ) The seeds aren't too expensive, but probably time consuming to grind a lot for a big dog. I use a mortar and pestle when i do it for my rats, but thats only in small amounts, so i'd consider going with the oil.

From what I have read some dogs have a sensitivity to flax, others do fine on it.

Flaxseed oil is an excellent choice for people, but for dogs wild fish oil is better. Dogs process animal products better than they do plant products. There are some fish oils you can buy as a liquid and put on food, but you have to keep it refrigerated and it can be expensive. Timberwolf Organics has a good one, I think. Now I just buy human-grade fish oil tablets (gel caps, actually) and let the dogs chew them up. They love them!

    Jamiya,
One question, how do you put up with the fish-breath? :D

Well, it's not too bad from the little gel caps. And since the dogs eat whole raw tilapia one day a week and canned fish of some sort a couple mornings a week, we just deal with it. :) Their breath doesn't smell for very long, and it's certainly better than any "doggy breath" I have smelled on kibble-fed dogs. :)

I'll give the fish oil a try. There was some right next to the flaxseed oil. OK I'll admit even a mild temporary fish-breath can't be as bad as cat poop breath. :D

Definitely! If it really bothers you, feed them a doggie breath mint after the fish oil. :D
