hey guys im visiting from the pit bull forum. i just got a new kitten and i was wondering, is it true that all Calicos are female? Whats the best way to litter box train? And if anyone knows of some good names for a little calico girl i would love to hear them.

Hi Amberlue! Welcome to the cat forum. It is true that all calicos are female. Read this for more info: http://www.petplace.com/articles/artShow.asp?artID=590

I have never had to litterbox train, as any kitten I've ever had was pre-trained by their mother. I'm sure someone here will have tips for you.

I had a beautiful calico girl several years ago whom I named Motley (cause she was a motley of colours and I was a headbanger in the 80's - shhh!!). I thought that was a cute name. Post some pictures of her when you have a chance. I just love calicos!

Here's my Motley as a baby: [IMG]

How about Mimi, Cali (not very original, but cute), Meow meow or Meowmi?

    Halaroo, your Motley was beautiful!

Hi. I hear that calicos tend to be very sweet cats. I have one (who's no execption to that rule!)

I have never seen a male calico yet.

As for the litterbox training, all I did was show the kittens where the litterbox was, take their paw, and have them scratch at the litter. If the kitten goes outside the box, you can try to collect whatever it was and put it in the litterbox and show the kitten again. The scent of that should get them to learn (so I've been told).

It took me a couple weeks to come up with my latest cat's name. I'm very bad at deciding! So, good luck with that and hopefully someone here will have a good suggestion!

Here's my calico, Zoe: She has a lot of white on her. When she was a kitten, she was mostly white with very faint spots. But, as she grew, the spots grew.

    Good luck!

By the way, growing up, I had a cat, Patches... it's not an original name, but it fits.

    Congrats on your new kitty!

Quoted from the site Halaroo posted:
I've read that about 1 in 3000 calicos are born male and are often infertile. A few years ago there was a calico male at my SPCA. That is the only one I've ever seen.

If your kitten does'nt pick up on using the litter box right away I would confine her to a single room with her litter box until she gets the hang of it. If she poops on the floor at all you can place the poop in the litter box...this might help her get the idea.

Hi. Welcome to the cat forum. :D Your kitty should be just fine with using her litter box. Sometimes kittens/cats can be kind of picky about their litter (i.e., they don't all like the pine pellets or those weird crystal litters). Also, for litter, just get regular litter. If you use the really sandy ones, keep in mind that they will inhale all that dust (not good for kitty) and also it can irritate their eyes. I just use regular old Jonny Cat litter and I mix in some of the pine litter for extra fresh scent.

D'oh. I guess I should have read the whole site before posting that they are all female!

A friend of ours has 2 calicos one female and one male. They've had the female ones for years from anther state and one day the male calico scratched their door and in comes this male cat that has the exact same patterns down to the number of extra toes and made his home with them. It was was strange. I wonder if cats can sense their own litter mates and follow their scent? I know that when we moved from CT to NY, Pumpkin recognized the smell where she was born and went crazy with excitement as we passed by Syracuse, NY.
