Rough Play Causes minor punctures on Duke

Duke and Freckled roughhouse and play fight so vigorously that if you didn't know they were playing you would swear they are trying to kill each other. Freckles thick coat, especially around his neck, protects him form Duke's teeth but this week Duke sustained two small punctures on his neck and face that actually bled. I dabbed a littte Neosporin on the spots just to ward off any infection.
I guess Duke will let Freckles know when enough is enough but I also don't to add to his list of nicknames "Old Scar Face" either.
I know there is nothing I can do to regulate the intensity of normal dog play but if Duke continues to get small nicks and cuts I might have to look into some sort of protective collar.
Anyone else have any experience in dealing with this situation?

Buffy gets poor Buddy's neck all the time!! I put antiseptic on it to keep it from infection. The trainer at Petsmart that I am taking Buffy to suggested that we give Buffy a "time out" in the bathroom by herself when she gets too rough. She told me to just unemotionally take Buffy by the collar and take her into the bathroom and count off 30 seconds and then let her out again. The trainer said that this should teach her that when she plays too rough play time is over. We just started this a couple of days ago so I am not real sure if it is working yet but we will keep trying!!! Hope this helps you!

I know I might be over sensitive, worry wort, what ever, but I discouraged my dogs from rough play as pups and still do. I've seen dogs that what starts out as inocent play, one gets mad, and the next thing you know, there's a full blown fight.

Sometimes I feel really guilty when my dogs start a vigorous game of rough house and I put the squelch on it. They look at me like I'm such such a party poop.

I also make sure they're in their own separate area when they have their toys, bones, and treats.

    O.K. I know I'm a little :0010:

I agree with the others I would put a stop to it. You dont want it to turn into something more

With my old dog and my old roommates dog they started off playing all the time then one day it turned into grr here and grrr there then it just kept getting bigger and nigger then it would get to the point where it was difficult to pull them apart to tell them no shortly thereafter I moved out, so that fixed my problem. My roommate and I had different points of view on dog raising, I on one hand can hardly even yell at a dog (hitting or any abuse is way out of the question for me) so a stern time out was all my dogs ever got. where as my roommate, (his dog had been previously abused, so he said he would never hit her) insisted his way was right where he never hit his dog but yelled and screamed at her to no end and would pick her up (50-60lb dog!) and throw her across the room. I think if he and I would have been on the same page our dogs would have been too. Sorry I am of no help
But totally off the subject, today as I was walking a dog, I saw these 2 dogs one looked like Duke and one like freckles, I thought wow Dukes dad came to visit me! Then as I got closer the Duke dog had slanted eyes, it looked so weird. and from the side the Freckles dog looked like a St. Bernhard, and the man walking them had a moustache

    lil96,
That's weird about seeing what sounds like our clones. If you were not in Houston then I would believe we have clones in a parallel universe. Freckles does look like a mini St. Bernard in profile, Dukes eyes are slightly slanted, and I do have a mustache. :D
