Friday morning Romeo woke me up at 3 am vomiting. He continued vomiting all through Friday and was starting to get dehydrated so we took him to the vet. His WBC count was high (21) so he needed to be put on antibiotics. But because he was vomiting, they had to be injected so we had to leave him there over night. We called back Saturday morning and they said he was still vomiting and wasn't eating. We checked back that afternoon and they said he was doing better and had stopped vomiting but they wanted to keep him one more night. I finally got to bring him home today and he's 100% back to normal.

At first, the vet was thinking that it could be either a blockage or he ate something toxic. We had given all the cats flea baths with a certain OTC shampoo that we'd never had any problems with before. But just to rule it out, I did a little research and was horrified at the stories I read. However, when we picked up Romeo, the vet said it probably wasn't the shampoo because he didn't get sick until about 36 hours after the bath. (I'm still not using that shampoo any more after what I'd read). So I racked my brain trying to figure out what he could have eaten that would be toxic and I think I finally figured it out. I was doing some wood working with some scraps of mahogany that I had laying around. I ended up with quite a bit of saw dust on the floor and I just read that most hardwoods are pretty toxic. So he most likely got some of the saw dust in his fur and swallowed it.

BTW, Iabsolutely love my vet. The total bill for keeping him 1 day & 2 nights, administering antibiotic injections & oral antibiotics for me to give him, the blood test, and office fee only came to $33. And we had given him the okay to do x-rays if he wanted, but he didn't feel it was necessary. Our old vet would have done them reguardless just to rack up the bill.

With our old vet, we spent over $600 in two days on two of our cats (no overnight stays, just blood work and a couple of x-rays). He overcharged (by at least double, sometimes triple) for everything and I totally blame him for the death of Chester (gave him an antibiotic that's not meant for cats with CRF) and indirectly for the death of Lizzy (she had cancer & CRF but really went downhill after Chester died).

I am just so much happier with our new vet. He's extremely low tech (records are hand written on note book paper, exam table is a regular countertop with newsaper, etc), but that allows him to keep his costs down so that people can actually afford the care for their pet rather than having it put down or hesitating to bring their pet in until it's too late because they don't have the money. And he truly loves the animals. I've heard from several people who don't like him because they think he's unfriendly, but the truth is he's just much more comfortable around animals than people.

33 dollars is nothing!  I'm glad to hear Romeo is doing ok, must have been very scary... Your vet sounds alot like the vet that neutered Kyrre. He is a man of few words, with a simple home office, very cheap and very good with animals. :)

He's still doing great and giving him his medicine isn't quite as bad as I thought it would be. After he got neutered they tried giving him a dose of oral antibiotics and he turned into a little tornado of claws & teeth so they had to give him an injection. But I've been working with him on the biting and he's a little mellower when being hendled, poked, & prodded now so I got it in w/o a drop spilled or spit.
