sick english bulldog...need advice

ok the story is that this dog, Tellie, belongs to an ex- best friend of mine. she recently moved out of state, right after i found out that she was steeling and lieing to me and my whloe family, and even trying to break-up my long-term boyfriend and I....along with a few other couples....i understand that shes had a difficult life and my need some kind of therapy...anyway she left the dog with me, and we had planed on sending tellie on a plane within a week. well that week came and went, and i didnt here from her for 2 weeks. tellie is on medication and her owner took most of it with her. i had called her and left several messages about it and still 1 more week went by before she called.."i might send the meds, but i dont know" how could she know that tellie needs meds and not send them?? now i have had tellie for over a month and she is just calling me asking me to send tellie out there. should i send her, or take care of her myself? when she was with her owner she was in really bad shape, and now that i have had her she getting heathy again.

do any of you know what the abandonment law is, and how that works?

 

Ill have a look around on the net for your area but your best option would probably be to call the local Animal Control to get the laws for the city you live in. Its illegal to abandon a pet but as she left the dog with you she could say it had been arranged, not sure, I do know of a case (didnt get to court) in California over a horse that was left with someone I know, a year later she tried to claim the horse back but almost got pulled in on abandonment charges herself so the friend that had the horse still has it, not the original owner.
What were the meds for?....Just curious.

 

I was once in the opposite situatuin with a cat, where someone asked me to watch it for a month, and she never came back, but I really needed to get rid of the cat, bc I was moving out of the country and the humane society wouldn't take it, bc they said it was my cat...urggg still bugs the crap out of me!!!! I can't talk about it.

But maybe if you convince the girl the dog is doing better with you, then she might let thedog stay with you, but generally people with mental problems will still want their dog back thinking the dog is fine with them and not understand reason.
I know from my experience with depression, my dog was the only thing that helped me to keep it together. It is difficult to say what to do in these situations.
Why didn't she just take the dog with her to begin with? Flying puts alot of stress on a dog. and if she is having money problems it would have been cheaper to ride with the dog. When dogs fly alone you have to pay extra charges.

Hi, what an awful situation to be in.
The law here stands with the owner. They'd make you give the dog back then fight your case to gain 'custody' of her. I only know this as a neighbour took the dog of a neighbour who was badly mistreating her animal, and the police took the dog straight back to her and warned the person who'd took it that they could face charges. How you'd stand on this I have no idea.

I really hope you manage to sort something out and get to keep the dog as it sounds like you're giving it a home it deserves.

By chance do you know where the dog is from? A breeder perhaps? Is there any visible form of ID on Tellie - ie a Tattoo? Check on her inside flank as well as ear. If not bring her into a vet or humane society and have them scan for a microchip. If the dog is identified you should be able to find the breeder. Contact the breeder first and explain the situation. I know if it was one of my dogs abandoned by its owner, as per my contract it would warrant the dog being returned to me, the breeder, where I could find it an excellent home. If that doesn't work talk to English Bulldog rescue and see what they have to say.

 

yeah, the dog was born in a puppy mill, that was run by her owners father......she got mites when she was 8 months old, and is just now getting treated for them (shes 2 years). Tellie dose have a micrchip, but it has all of her owners info....as far as the meds...she was on cephalaxin and alochlor, and also getting Mitaban dips for the mites.

 

If you feel the dog has been abused (neglect is abuse) then I would be reluctant to send the dog back. If you call A. Control you dont have to give your name, just ask for the laws in the city, or as Jas says, probably better phone a local rescue, they are usually pretty clued up as to what the local laws are. If you do want to keep the dog is it possible to speak to the owner....maybe for you to take over ownership in lieu of what she owes you or something, it sounds as though the dog still needs medication, it may not be able to fly out to her anyway with medical problems. The stress alone can make its condition worse. I dont know about state to state flights but I know with dogs that have gone international they have to have health certificates, tests etc, it can be expensive. However if AC gets involved they may be able to take the dog back to whoevers name is registered on the microchip if that is in California.

 

Here is some info for pet flights, some airlines wont carry certain breeds, including APBT's AST's, Bull Terries, Dobies, Rotts etc. :x and according to this site they all require a health certificate from a vet within 10 days prior to flying and the pet has to be free from disease.

simple...tell her first to send you a MONEY ORDER (no personal check) for payment to get the dog to her . Bet she doesn't send you the $$$....when you don't see the $$$ ask her to sign ownership of the dog over to you
