Hello. A little kitten showed up and I took her in to keep her from being taken to the pound or euthanized. When I picked her up, she was a mess. Her eyes were stuck shut with mucous that had hardened on her eyes, she was barely able to breathe due to being so congested, and she was terribly skinny. She was also eat up with fleas and ear mites (probably has worms also). The kitten showed up at a woman's house and she threw water on the kitten to get her down off of the screen door. I don't know if this is what made her sick or not. But I took her home and cleaned her up and put her in a warm crate. She seemed to be getting better; she didn't sneeze as much and her energy was picking up. But two nights ago, she got out into the house while I was away at work. When I came home, she was sneezing and congested and her eyes started ooozing again. I took her to the vet and she just gave me some amoxycillin for the kitten and put some ear mite medicine in its ear. Also, this morning, I noticed she is losing hair in clumps from her back leg and thigh. I don't know what else to do. The vet charged me $65 for that one visit and I can't afford too many more visits like that. I can' t keep her but I don't want to let her go in this condition. She is so sweet and I don't want to put her down just because she is going through a rough time. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do with this sweet little baby?

Some vets will take care of your kitten for low cost or free including spaying, worming, and meds. Call different vets and clinics in your area and explain your situation. Also call your local animal shelters for the same. She needs vet care ASAP. If you cannot make even small installment plans with any of the vets, the best thing to do is to surrender the kitten to a no-kill shelter right away. Good luck!

I'm so glad you are helping this little kitten. The amoxycillin should help clear up the congestion, eye discharge and sneezing. Did they give you enough to give it to her for 10 days or so? I'm not sure about the hair loss...it could be due to stress but it could also be something more serious. If you go to www.petfinder.com and click on shelter & rescue groups you can find a list of shelters in your state. Maybe you can find a nice shelter that will be willing to help. Best wishes.
    Keep us posted.

i wish you and your new kitty the best of luck. i would ask your vet about installement payments....or work out a payback plan.

i would think the medication would work. but...of course, now you have to think about the other expenses. vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and anything else that might come up. has the kitten had his shots?? and been wormed?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I know she needs veterinary care and I am currently contacting all the no-kill shelters in my area for help. I will also take the advice of calling different vets instead of just the one I went to. By the way, she started playing some today! :D Aside from her total transformation and energy gain when I took her in, cleaned her up, and started taking care of her, this is the first really positive sign I have seen with her.

Just an update on the little one. None of the vets around here give discount services except for free first visit IF your pet is healthy. Also, all of the no-kill shelters are overcrowded and they are not accepting any more cats right now. But one of them did give me the name and number of a woman who takes in their sick cats. I contacted her and she is truly an answer to my prayers. She gave me the name of her vet and because she works with the shelter, she can help with the spaying and vaccinations. I've decided to keep the kitten here until she is better. If my landlord says absolutely not, then the woman said she will take her in and find her a home. As for the baby's health. She is coming along well. Still don't know what is causing hair loss but her congestion is all but gone and her eyes look better. I will be taking her in for vaccinations and worming next Saturday, if her URI is cleared up completely.
