I was thinking of fish while I was having a smoke and I thought of something that sort of worried me... Does anybody know if smoking in the house effects the fish water or the fish in any way???

P.S. I am not trying to talk about drugs or anything I just want to know if the smoke gets in the water and effects the fish?

hmmm.... I've never really thought about it before (not a smoker). Is the tank in the same room that you normally smoke in?

Well at that time it was (I smoke wherever I am at the time). My piranha are in my computer room and my others are downstairs. And I am always on the computer so yes they are in that room when I smoke.

i woulsnt think that smoking would affect them due to the millions of people that smoke and still own aquariums.

yea i was thinking that to, but you never know if it takes off a half a year or a year of some fish. thats interestiing.

I know that if you set off a bug bomb/fogger in the house it can kill your fish, so I'm guessing cigarette smoke isn't good for them either.

I have the same point of view as t_chelle16.. However, I wonder does anyone did any research or survey on that one?

Hi Fishkin, The smoke can be drawn down into the water if there is an opening in the top. Also if you have an air pump that draws in air externally (these have a fiber filter) take a look at the filter and you can see the amber tint of cigarette smoke. Next time you clean your computer monitor take a look at the residue and you will see the same amber tint. I can say this with absolute certainty since I have been a smoker for over 35 years.

wow thats interesting. I would agree with smoke being pulled down into the water. though with a filter i dont think it will do to much of damage to the fish.

yea, especially if there was active carbon in the filter....you never know though.

might just might though i have no clue cause premature death for the fish like shorten the lifespan. but just make sure there is carbon in the filter.
