For the fist time in many a moons I am getting a new leather sofa for my house. I only have my self to blame but in the past I have let my 3 little ones use our old sofa as a scratching post. Actually when I catch them doing it I will stop them, but I know when I am not at home they mark it up.

Does any one have an sugestions on what I can do so they don't use my new sofa as a pin cushion? I get delivery in a few weeks. Thanks

    Sour apple spray Works

We were having the same issue with Cleo as she ate anything paper in the house. I bought sour apple spray from the vet. Give her somthing to scratch or chew (something you dont need) and spray it. Then put some spary on your new sofa (its clear and doesnt stain). the cat should avoid clawing our chewing it.

Because they lick their feet to clean them, the apple taste will get into their mouth.

I had luck with the spray-on repellant for cats.

You can use double-sided sticky tape strategically placed on the sides they like to scratch on. We placed those short scratching posts in the corners of all our sofas and they have deterred our little furballs from messing them up. 8)

I applied spray-on repellant the day Hugo was introduced to his new home including wires. So far so good.

I have had immense success with ssscat deterrent spray can. It is a can of harmless air with a motion detector attached to the top. When the animal comes close to it, it beeps and then sprays a blast of air. Or you can set it to just beep once they're "trained" (if you can train a cat--lol). I ordered mine from valley vet supply but lots of places have it. And now I only set the can where I don't want the cats to go and don't even turn it on!

Sorry, I don't have any good suggestions. I've passed leather furniture at the stores that looked so nice but I would be afraid to get anything like that.

Here is what one of our old chairs look like. The newer furniture doesn't look much better. :)

All above advice sounds good. Be determined, and be sure to praise your kitties well when they scratch where they're allowed (like their scratching post) I did that with my cat and it worked very well :) I also recall halaroo on this board suggesting shaking a tin can with marbles in it.

    Good luck! :y_the_best:
