Ok, here is the deal folks: My poor kitties (one a black and white female, the other a blue russian male) both live downstairs in our basement with eachother. About three weeks ago both of them started to devolp mats in their fur, and now the female's fur is starting to fall out in an odd pattern, the male skin is starting to flake. All of this is taking place only below the neck, nothing on the face. We have had a problem with the male not bathing, but never with the female. I have researched mange and I don't think this is it at all. Their faces are both fine. They are not outside cats, indoors only, they have no contact with any other cats. Oh, the male is about 14 years old, and the female is around 12. Anyone have any clues as to what could be bugging my poor kitties? Thanks for helping.

no clue...maybe allergies to something in your basement? Vet can do a skin scrape to see if they might have ringworm or a parasite on their skin

Could be any number of things...I would have a vet look at them just to be safe. Good luck.

Hi. I agree with the others about taking them to the vet. Just out of curiosity, why do you keep your cats in the basement?

    Bath time.

We keep them in the basement because of our upstairs kitties, if we were to let the four intermix, they would surly kill eachother. The basement is finished though.
We just brushed and bathed them, but no improvement. Their fur didn't shed that much in the bath! I am at a lost here. We are taking them to the vet tomorrow first thing

Yeah, seeing a vet should help get to the bottom of this. Let us know how they make out!

    Kitties are getting better!

Thank you guys for all your help.
So it turns out that the female has an alergy to fleas, and the male just gave up on bathing.
    Thanks again.
