spay/neuter and mixed breeds

Here's a can of worms. We all advocate spay/neuter to keep pet populations down, right? Do you think that if/when spay/neuter campaigns become successful, we will see mixed breeds disappear? I personally like them and have never owned a purebred.

That is so far off it is hard for me to imagine! I'm quite sure there will always be idiots who don't spay/neuter and plenty of mix-breed pups. I guess the ideal would be to make the population decline to the point that dogs aren't being put to sleep b/c there isn't room for them.

All I thought of when I read your post is all the "NEW FAD" breed of mixed breeds being sold for high amounts of money.
Now, aren't they really "Mutts"?? They are so popular they make my head spin.

I happen to own both pedigree and mutts. The pedigree's are from shelters (no papers) and my mixed breeds are also from shelters. The only dog I own now that was never in a shelter is my lab/retriever.

Funny thing, my mixed breed is the one that I trust the most and is a pet therapy dog. She has an awsome personality. She spent 7 months in the shelter. No one wanted her because she had "Pit bull" in her.
She has her CGC and has done training seminars for Animal Control Officers for our state. She was the one we used for the fund raiser last year (remember she was married? LOL) and she also has done fashion shows. She really shines. But she is Nothing more than a mutt.

I don't care much about my dogs being pedigree or mutts, But I really would like to see less and less litters being had in the future. Coming from someone who does rescue, it sucks and I can't tell you how many dogs are put down.

All People need to take more responsibility with spaying/neutering their pets.
I personally would love to see a law put into effect mandating the spay and neuter of all pit bulls (except from experienced kennels) getting rid of all the back yard breeders that cause so much havoc with creating more dogs that no one can place. I sometimes go to bed crying thinking of all of those poor innocent dogs that are put down daily thanks in part to back yard breeders and irresponsible dog owners.

    Back yard breeders SUCK!

Oh, I totally agree. I do rescue as well and foster dogs, and every week we have to pick and choose which ones we save. It is heartbreaking to see so many in need and know we can't save them all. So I heartily agree with spay/neuter. I just happened to wonder what would happen if we ever did manage to stop all accidental breeding. Even the "designer breeds" are not the mixed breeds I am talking about. I'm talking about the ones you look at and go - how cute! She looks like a rat terrier/pom/irish wolfhound/beagle/dachsund!

In a perfect world we would be able to have all accidental breedings stopped but I honestly never see this happening. All people would have to think the way we do. So we should never stop fighting but I dont see it becoming a 100% solution. But you do have a point I have mostly owned mixed breeds and in my opinion they are some of the best dogs to own.

I just find them so interesting! They look unique and you never know what their personality will be like. Of course, I love purebreds, too.
