I just came home and found out that Syd broke out in hives! It isnt the worst case but it looks kind of bad, it is only on her body, NOT her face. I found some Benadryl Allergy but the emergancy Vet said not to give her that. Whats the difference between the allergy one and the regular one? Can I take her to the vet tomorow as long as she doesnt get worse, or should i take her to the emergancy vet? The emergancy Vet is the only emergancy one close to me and they have tried scamming me out of money many times. Luckily i have a friend who works for a Vet that saved me from loosing money i didnt need to spend. I'm worried they are going to do that and would rather not take her to them, but i will if i have to. Any suggestions?

I think benadryl allergy is the same as regular benadryl--gosh knows I take enough of the stuff myself. I have given my dogs the dye-free, alcohol-free liquid benadryl before at the dosage my vet said to give. It really didn't work all that well though. Prescription adarax (sp?) worked better for them.

    BTW what caused the hives?

Thanks! I have no idea what caused it. She got hives once before from eating horse poop, but we aerent anywhere near horses today. I didnt give her anything besides her food today.I did change her food and started giving her supplements but that was two weeks ago.

ther is straight benedryl which is fine, yo just have to give it accordng to weight, tehre is aa benedryl "allergy" formula that contains a decongestant which you cant give

    hope winnie feels better

Basic diphenhydramine (benedryl) is dosed at 1mg per lb, it can and often does make them sleepy, you need to make sure theres no swelling around the face, throat etc they can have difficulty breathing, also watch for general respiratory problems.
You should at least phone your vet or emergency vet unless by now its already been a few hours in which case the swelling and whelts should have come down somewhat, if they havent you should go to a vet now.
