Sydney's apparent recovery, hopefully

It seems that Sydney is making a full recovery from her bout with parvo, I think...I'm a little concerned tonight because she seems to be breathing very heavy. I had her in her crate, laying down, and she was panting so hard that I was really getting concerned. I noticed this earlier today as well. Could this be the virus coming back? She's eating and drinking normally. She hasn't vomited since last Monday. Her BM's have been pretty close to what I would call normal (although I did notice a softer BM today). Is this something I should be worried about??? I've never had a puppy before, so I don't really know what to expect.

 

Hi, it shouldnt be the virus 'coming back', she s been okay now for a long enough, if she was relapsing you would usually see the onset of vomiting again and general lethargy but that said I think you should have the vet take a look at her anyway. There are sometimes long term effects left from parvo (the most common being heart failure and more commonly in Rotts....just from own experience) however you normall wouldnt see this until much later (common age Ive noticed is around 2 years old)

You mentioned the dog having roundworm and hookworm I think? does you vet want you to follow up any treatment there? A heavy infestation of roundworms can cause problems in the lungs and with the breathing but with the problems shes had then you need to be careful of what you give her (so nothng from over the counter, only through your vet).

This probably sounds like a stupid question but did you make sure the pup wasnt overheating in the crate, I dont know where you are but the weather here has suddenly got a lot warmer, it doesnt take that much for a dog to overheat in one, more so when its the full plastic type.

How is her breathng now? are her gums nice and pink? (unless they have normal black pigment of course) can you hear any wheezing.

Hope she is doing better now but like I said, it would be worth haveing the vet take another look at her.

 

It's good to know that it's not the virus reoccuring.

I don't think she was over heated - it was about 73 degrees in the house and a high in the middle of the day yesterday of 80. I guess she could have been over heated - but I don't think so??? However, we do have a plastic crate, but she was panting heavy when she wasn't in the crate as well.

The vet did give us a deworming pill to give to her in about another week, then she goes in for her next round of vacinations two weeks after that.

Her breathing doesn't seem real labored. I don't hear any wheezing. her gums look pink and black (but I think that's her natural color). I checked for dehidration and that seems fine too (plus she's drinking regularly).

I'm planning on calling the vet today. I'm probably just over reacting. I'm sure she's fine. I'm still tense about last week.

 

I dont think your over-reacting at all, your doing exactly the right thing in calling the vet who may want you to bring her in to make sure all is okay.

Just to clarify though, I didnt say she wasnt relapsing, just that from what your descrining....the panting...but she is still eating and drinking and stool is almost normal...it doesnt sound like a typical relapse.

Please update us on how shes doing, what the vet said etc.
