THINGS THAT ARE POISONOUS FOR CATS

I just read a message where someone wasn't aware that cows milk was bad for cats and thought it might be a good idea to point out what other things are bad for cats. I am aware that lillies are poisonous for cats, so I never keep them in the house. They just need to chew a tiny bit of a lillie leaf to get very sick.

I also recently read that onions are toxic to cats. I'd never head of that before!

Poinsettia plants and chocolate are the first two that came to my mind......

onions are toxic to cats and if someone has to feed their cat chicken baby food for illness or whatever purposes should check the label for onion.
also toomuch canned tuna isn't good something about it can cause anemia I think (although I could be a bit off on that - but I know it's not good for them)

Duh, I was thinking of raw onions and oranges. My cats always run away whenever I'm peeling them. LOL's. Yes, Mary. I believe you are correct. Too much tuna is definitely not good for them. They will lack essential vitamins and minerals, especially taurine. Wasn't that in Nern's article on the fish? Personally I just think tuna has an unusually high mercury count and should be avoided unless it's in small amounts as in treats, or getting sick cats to start eating again.
    Just found Nern's link:

Oops. Taurine is an amino acid, not a vitamin or mineral.

lots of plants are...all the ones in the philidendron family. which may be a cousin to the lily??

if they eat a poisonous plant...their throat will swell, and their tongue will swell...they wont be able to breathe...and this occurs usually immediately...up to a couple of hours after eating the plant.

i know...max got into one...when he was little...i had to call poison control. they recommended a tablespoon of milk as a way to counteract the poison....

i dont know whether anyone will read this....since the contest is going and this is kind of an older post.

this morning i got up...and there are my two kitties in the family room, chompin on my antenna wire on my stereo. it is a tiny plastic coated wire, that is long and was dangling over the tv stand. well..now i am beside myself, thinking of all the possibilities...like how much did each of them eat...is the wire exposed in their stomachs and will puncture the lining....(the wire is very fine....but still enough to cause damage i would think if the end pricked the intestional lining...)

they both ate this morning...but didnt chow the way they normally do...but all morning they have been running after each other playing like normal. and no apparent changes in their behavior.

i do not think i can handle one more crisis situation with these kitties...

i would be a basket case if i had children...i just know i would. they would be in the doctors office every other day

I know it's not funny Lynn, but the way you described the information is hilarious! I think you are doing fine and so are the M+M's. Cats are just like babies. I really don't see any difference except for the appearance. The M+M's are lucky to have your as their meowmmy! You'll always be there to take great care of them :qm3: :qm4: :m33: JUST STOP IT WITH THE CRISIS THINGY(imagination running wild) and you'll be just fine.

i am keeping a close eye out. im trying to remember what people have said about the intestine. i know max had that barium that one time...it went through his intestine in a couple of hours...so does that mean things pass in a couple of hours...

if thats the case...why did someone post that their grandmas cat passed a string after about six months???? oh dear, i dont want to worry about this for six months....

was that nern's grandma???? NERN!!! NERN!!! was that you??? am i right??/ six months? :0011:

im thinking they will be okay...this time...mikey...he was the naughty one...he instigated it. [-X see??? see??? max has been a bad influence on him.... :m3:

    I KNEW IT!! OMG...TWO NAUGHTY KITTIES....HEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLllllllllllllllllllllllppppppppppppppppppp

8-[ :m39: Of course barium is going to pass through quickly. It has no nutritive property and is pretty thin made up of mostly water. It'll just go right through as meant to be. You are such a worry wort. As for the string episode, cats, like people, can have partial intestinal blockage which can last months. You'd know if your kitties start acting strange. I know you are a great meowmmy because you are ALWAYS consulting with your vet on everything. :0023: I love your M+M's. They are so sweet, so loving, so naughty!

    Just found out:

Cow's milk- cats can't break down lactose so they can have digestive problems like diarrhea.

Chocolate is toxic to pets- increases heart rate and respiration rates, causes vomiting, diarrhea, and depresssion.

Onion powder- damages feline red blood cells and causes anemia.

Tuna- exclusive feeding on tuna causes vitamin E deficiency (yellow-fat disease) or rubber jaw (bone demineralization). Tuna is low in calcium and extremely high in phosphorus.

Raw eggs- blocks the cat's use of B-vitamins and may cause dermatitis, hair loss, and neurological dysfunction.
