Update on Indiana (Allergydog)

I figured I would post this since Indy is not the only dog here with bad allergies.

I took him to the vet Weds b/c he looked so bad. I felt OK with the hotspots but he was losing his hair which really concerned me.

The vet did skin scrapings to make sure it wasn't mites or mange. And took blood to test his thyroid to make sure it wasn't hypothyroidism. It was neither. The vet gave me Temaril P which is some sort of anti-itch medicine that includes prednisone. It is also used to treat kennel cough (read about it online). He also told me to start giving Indy skin supplements (omega 3's and 6's) so I bought some from Petsmart (Lipiderm).

Anyways, I was just looking at him. He looks so good. His skin is white again!!! I'm so happy. Hopefully most of his hair will grow back. I also stopped the Natural balance and put him back on Calif Natural just in case that had something to do with it (I at least know for sure he can do well on it). I am also going to stop giving him dog treats. I think I am going to give him raw food as treats.

The vet wants to keep him on the Temaril P until it cools down here and then try to get him through winter - he thinks it is a seasonal thing which it probably is. He says since Indy has such bad allergies, if we either can't get through winter, or starting next spring he gets it really bad again with the meds then we are going to do the allergy testing.

That is just the update.

Do any of you know any real quality Omega 3 & 6 supplements? I want to get the best for him and there are so many different types out there so if any of you know what the best is then tell me. I just bought the stuff from Petsmart (it may be good - I don't know) until I can get better stuff. I thought about buying it in human form but I read that you should give vitamin E when you give omega 3 & 6 and none of the human stuff had that - the pet stuff did so I felt more comfortable giving it rather than trying to compound my own little concoction.

 

Last year Sebastian had some kind of allergy where he actually chewed his skin so raw it was bloody. My vet also put him on Temeril P which seemed to clear it right up. He has'nt had anymore incidents like that since then. Anyway, I'm glad Indiana is doing better now.

 

Eliza, thanks for posting the update on Indy. and so glad to hear he doing much better. I dont know about he quality of vitamins.

what NB food was Indy on? I think calif natural allergy since it only has lamb rice and flaxseed oil. I tried it on Jake but I found his main allergy is flaxseed so I am doing the raw.

regarding prednizone, that is nasty stuff. and you dont want to keep them on it long term because it breaks down their immune system.

And I would also put indy on accodphilous (sp) because his immune system is donw from the allergies it gets the good bacteria growing and a green supplement like sea kelp or some form, there are lots out there.

if you can get heim healthy with his supplements and new diet, hopefully he wont need the prednizone next year.

He was on Natural Balance duck & potato. He was only on it about 2 wks. He had been on calif natural before and he did very well on it for a few months then he had his second allergy attack. I don't know if it was the food but I didn't want to chance it.

The vet said that I should start weaning down the temaril p. I think I will start that tomorrow. He said hopefully I can get it down to just a few pills every couple of days. I know it is not ideal but right now he needs it.

I went to the nzymes website. I think i may try a bottle of the treats after a couple of weeks. I don't want to overload him. I will give it a few weeks with the meds and see how he does and then maybe add it in so I will know if he has any reactions to it. Same with the acidophillis.

I use Grizzly Salmon Oil with all my dogs. I swear by the stuff my dogs all have such healthy skin and coats. It's an all natural omega 3&6 health skin and coat supplement. I buy the 34oz bottle which comes with a pump bottle from the Drs. Fosters & Smith catalog you can also get it from the KV vet supply catalog. There's like four different size bottles but since I have so many dogs I buy the biggest one which is about $25 but it last forever!

 

Yes, go with some kind of wild fish oil. Grizzly is from farm-raised salmon, which is good also. Timberwolf Organics makes a liquid wild fish oil. I have gone the convenience route and now just buy human wild fish oil gel caps and feed those to the dogs.

 

Vitamin E Supplement With Fish Oil?

[/b] Just began supplementing my two girls (40# and 50#) with Grizzly Salmon Oil. I am at my wits end with the Aussie itching. Started last night and am praying it will bring relief eventually. I have researched my head off regarding vitamin E supplementing, when doing the oil. All of you Grizzly Salmon Oil users....are you giving vitamin E? If so, how much are you giving? Thanks so much for any info shared!

 

I recently hear that too. that is extremely important to add vitamin e when supplementing wiht fish oils.

It has somehting to do with metablizing the fish oils. I give my 50 # dog and 100# dog a 200 iu pill
