I saw this on the news this morniing, what a great idea, this woman has been putting together care pkgs for the dogs serviing in Iraq, the kits include doggles to keep sand out of the eyes and booties so their pads dont get burned in the 115 + degree heat along with cool scarves. to help them cool down

Someone told me recently that war dogs do not return home.
They are put down so as not to bring any contaminations back to the US.
Please can anyone dispel this for me? I find this very sad and disheartening if found to be true.

I know in the Vietnam war dogs were considered as equipment and many of the dogs were left behind to be euthanized.

I knew of the veitnam dogs. I am glad to hear we have grown up enough to see they are more valuable than equipment.

Just did a little research on this, the dogs in Iraq (at least British military dogs) are sometimes kept there for the duration. This is the attack/gaurd dogs, when one handler is sent home they will keep the dogs there and they will work with another handler, the search dogs though will stay with the one handler and will come home when the handler does. As far as diseases they may pick up, if necessary they go to a quarrantine station/kennel at the Royal Army Veterinary Corps depot at Melton Mowbray in Leicesteshire UK.
