When to spay my kitten?

My kitten will be 5 months old this week. I was planning to have her spayed over the Memorial Day weekend so I have a long weekend to be with her. Does the timing seem right? Or should I wait until she is at least 6 months old. Also, will she need any special care once she gets home?

 

spay now! my kitten was neutered at 13 weeks so 5 months is plenty. all you have to do is keep her calm and warm. if she picks at her stitches you will need an elizabeth collar. or perhaps you could put one on her straight away to prevent accidents.

 

I agree with Kylie, spay now. My girl was spayed very young, before I got her, at 10 weeks. I think that's too young but 5 months is old enough in my opinion. My other kitty was a year old when she was spayed, just before I adpoted her. I had to dab her stich area with hydrogen peroxide to keep it clean, but other than that she didn't require any special care. You will probably want to keep her from running and jumping in particular for the first week or so to prevent the stitches from coming out. Maybe keeping her in her carrier for the first few days, if possible?

 

Now would be fine...they seem to recover quicker when its done at a younger age. I had 2 of mine fixed at 4 months. Just give her a nice, quiet, comfy area to keep her well rested after the surgery.

 

Hi Fblack. Your maine Coon kitten sure is cute! :mrgreen: I agree about getting her spayed now. It will be nice for her as well that you will be at home. I'm not sure how other members here feel about pain meds after a spay, but I think it's a good thing for 5-7 days after a spay. It's got to be painful. Not only that, but the pain meds make them a little sleepy, so they end up getting much more needed bed rest. Not to mention they are not in any pain. You can get it in a liquid form and she will most likely love the taste of it. So, you can either put it on top of her soft food or just let her lick it off her plate/bowl. Even if she doesn't like it, giving her liquid drops is very easy. You just sit her on your lap and drop the liquid in her mouth. I wish your kitty all the best.

Your kitten is adorable! Please use the pain meds. I wish I would've for my 2 girls Pumpkin and Venus when they were spayed. I didn't know the pain meds were available. My boys Pooky, Monty Boy, and Milo did not have any problems with the neutering, but both girls were in pain and in hiding for 1 day and afterwords they wanted to be held and cuddled. Isn't 1 day for us the equivolent of 3 days for them? I can't imagine being in severe pain for 3 days. It's like getting a c-section without any meds. Good luck with your kitty!

 

I scheduled the procedure at my local vet for the 28th. I was pleased to learn that they give liquid pain meds standard. Also, they use some sort of internal disolving stitches that reduces the need for a cone shaped collar. (In most cases).


I will get her micro chipped the same day. They want to charge $51 here in San Diego. That seems expensive. Does anyone know what a microchip should cost?

 

My vet charged $25 for the mircochip and then I had to pay $15 to register it.

 

Hi. I'm glad you are getting the liquid pain meds. I don't remember exactly how much I paid for the microchip. I know it was between $30-$50 at the time.
