Well ,my vet only charges me 8 .oo for the shots and puppy check each time ,fecal and all .So ,all mine go regular to the vet .I guess some vets overcharge .I tell you though mine is a good one ,I have had recues with problems ,he don't even charge for that .He is good to me .We have a bond and understand both our needs .We don't always agree but we do always work together .He makes it affordable for me ,helps by cutting the cost of all my meds to the bare minimum and truly I think most vets would if you had a good set down talk with them ,espically on rescues .I guess I just have the faith in that cause mine does ,but it has been a long and good relationship with he and I and his staff ,the other 3 vets also that are there .I think that is the key .hard earned trust on both sides .

The vet we are currently going to won't even clip toenails without an extra charge. (Looking for a new one, but don't really need one as we are using a homeopath for most things.)

Jamiya, My vet says she wont vaccinate them for rabies unless she has proof of their other vaccinations. I took the bottles in to show her and she would not accept that. I understant the whole trust issue but I had been using her for a year or two no problems. When I vaccinated my dog myself she was not happy. The same with one of my poms. Her breeder gave her all her initial shots. took the lables off and put them on a piece of paper with the dates on them. She was 5mos at the time I got her. My vet would not except this and wanted to re vaccinate her. I completly trust the breeder I got her from. She took all the pups to the vet, mine more than once, (since she was 5mos when I got her) she had planned on keeping her but decided she had enough dogs and sold her to me.

I guess I just don't understand the reasoning. The other shots are not required to make the rabies shot work or anything like that. And there is no law saying you have to get them at all. All I can think of is either 1) your vet is out to get more money (I hope this isn't the case), or 2) she really believes it is necessary to get those boosters and she thinks she is the only one who can be trusted to do it.

Either way, you are the consumer. You have a right to make medical decisions for your pet. If you choose to do the non-mandatory vaccinations yourself or if you choose not to get them at all, that should be your business.

I won't even let my vet take my dogs into the other room without me. I have heard too many stories of vets bringing dogs "up to date" on their shots as a matter of routine, without consulting the owner. For some dogs this is a death sentence.

When we were vaccinating, I had a semi-retired vet that came to the house and vaccinated everyone. Was a real lifesaver with 2 cats and 2 dogs and 2 small children. He did them all at once in our home for less than the regular vets charged.

Jamiya, I am not sure why my vet wont. I know they dont need the other shots for the rabies so I dont understand why she wont either. Anyway we are looking for a new vet.

There are some vets that think they are Gods and can make decisions alone ,I use to have one like that ,quickly told her (I had been there 8 yrs ) one day ,you are not God ...I do not understand why not the rabies shot .Have you thought to get in touch with the veterary board and ask them to help with this issue .Sometimes a former professor or a state board will have a 'little talk ' with the vet to bring them back to earth .
Although most vets I know do not trust a breeders word on giving shots ,there is no reason not to give the rabies .And a vet cannot sign off on a certificate saying all shots were given if they did not give them for you to take to a groomer /kennel ,nor can they board one without proof from another vet or themselves that the shots were given as it can cause them to lose their license or at least be reprimanded and really cause troubel if they board one and then other there catch an illness .So ,the reasoning may be not in the shots themselves (rabies ) but what you wish the vet to do so you can take t to a dog park ,groomer ,etc.

I understand fully what you are saying Malti. I would not ask anyone to risk getting in trouble or losing their job. All I wanted from her was a rabies shot. I didnt need proof of my dogs other vaccinations. I never board my dogs, there are no dog parks here ect. Unfortunatly I believe she is a little money hungry. Their prices are constantly going up and the only improvements I see are new flowers out front with a huge sign telling you not to let your animals on their lawn. LOL. Oh and the new fountain in the lobby. I am in the process of looking for another vet though, and hopefully I can find one I am comfortable with.
