How did your Pets get thier names?

Discussion in 'Dogs - all breeds / types' started by susan_cude@hotmail.com, Apr 1, 2004.

  1. My mini Dachshund is named Casey. My daughter named her, I promised her she could even though i didn't like the name much! now of coarse I can't imagine her with any other name.

My shi tzu is named Freebie. He got that name when my husband was telling was of his employee's about him, the man asked him how much he cost, David responded: he was a Freebie! So that's it! simple...I wasn't happy with that one either, but like Casey can't imagine another name now....

    What about you? :D

My (cat) Moe is bow-legged so we were toying with calling her Bow but it never felt right. She also has a cow pattern on her leg so I started calling her Moo. Then we just combined them to Moe! I still call her Moo sometimes.

    Cute kitty!!

Both of our dogs where named by other people, which is ironic since I love to name critters. I always have to find just the right name!

Nala was a puppy and didn't know her name, so we thought about changing it. We went through a ton of names and almost changed it to Tasha. But Lion King is my son's favorite movie and Nala nipped so much she was like a little lion, so we kept it. The only thing I don't like about it now is the lack of nickname possibilities.

Bonnie Blue knows her name - and it's so darn fitting that we can't change it.

Rocky got his name because when we first got him and took him for a walk he would stop at every large rock and want to play with it. We have a school up the street that has 3 huge rocks infront of it and Rocky always drags you to them so he can climb all over them! Being the incredibly intelligent preson I am (J/J) I was like, "Let's call him Rocky!"

 My sister wanted to name him Buddy but my dad thought that name was too common. I guess my sister got her way though, because Rocky's registered name is Tinelli's Buddy Blue.

My mom wanted to name him Master and my dad agreed with her but then I thought "What about if her ever runs away?" then I'd be running down the street after him yelling " Come back Master, come back!"

    well

Well. Cupcake got her name when my step-dad brought her home. My mom said we werent having ANYMORE dogs.. well he insisted we keep her and because of my little sister my mom finally gave in, but not before she got the last laugh, she told him that if we kept her she got to name her Cupcake that way whenever he would take her on duck hunts, and quail shoots, if she ran off hed have to call after a yellow lab named Cupcake.. It was hilarious and she is just the sweetest lab ever!! I love her so much and her name is adorable to me!!
Cookie got her name from my 7 yr old sister. She was 5 at the time, and my mom let her name her, she thought of many names like brownie and watermelon (lol that was the funniest one) and she even came up with CORNDOG... lol.. she ended up with Cookie, and my mom calls her a burnt sugar cookie cause shes a chocolate lab.. lol...

Thats how my 2 dogs got their names.. My cats rabbits horses and ect. are a different story

Punk the cat got his name because when we were bringing him home he was irritating my brother and my brother said "this cat is a little punk". It is actually quite a fitting name.

Samantha (dog) - Not really sure. My other dog was named Stanley so I wanted to stick with S's for some reason and I just liked samantha. It sounds sweet like her.

Indiana (dog) - At first he was Remington after another dog I had but that just didn't seem right so I named him after Indiana Jones (my fav movie).

Hercules (cat) - He is a big cat. Not necessarily big from being fat (although he is fat), he is really tall and just big. At the time I was really into that Hercules: The legendary journeys show.

Prissy (cat) - She is a himalayan and sort of prances around, very dainty sort of, hence, prissy.

Whitey (cat) - got him when i was like 1 and he is completely white.

Scratchy (cat) - likes to scratch people

remington (dog) - my dad got him by trading him for a remington rifle. good trade!

    Dog names...

We searched for names for my 3 yr old Pit Bull for about 2 weeks before he came home to us as 6 weeks old. Me and hubby argued forever on names and I said it was plum Foolish. The name stuck. He has been Foolish ever since. My Doberman Lexani is named after a set of Rims on my car, my Dog Molly who was recently PTS had her name when I bought her. Big Jack the Maniac also had his but it suits his 1lbs 9 oz self lol....Our newest addition, a 6 week old blue eyed Siberian Husky females name is Indian and Latin. Meaning Goddess of the Moon and also meaning silver. Her name is Luna.

We went through several naming sites online but the Indian baby naming site for Humans is what found us Luna. I am SO picky about naming my animals. I search longer for their names than I did my childrens. I feel like a name is got to STICK, and that the dog must LOOK like a name. When you LOOK at them, their personality, looks, characteristics and everything should pour out their name.

My husband jason was going active army when we got him so he got the name Specialist Stewart after Dh but we call him Spec and he has a spec of white under his chin. Ranger got his name, well, because he looked like a Ranger. I was going through the different sports teams, like the Mavericks (that was almost his name!) and the Cowboys, but then I remembered the Rangers, and when I looked at him, it fit. Well, he still had to grow into it, he wasn't quite looking the part as a little puppy curled up in your arms:) but he grew into it well! Gracie (the cat) got her name, Ok, this is weird, but it fits, she got Grace because I showed her grace because I got her only a week after my 1 year old cat got run over, and so her middle name is hope because the family was giving her to the pound the next day because their cat wasn't suposed to have kittens. (which is why she wasn't fixed and was let to run loose around the neighborhood, right?)

Talk about picky! I am extremely picky when it comes to names. It has to sound good, fit the dog right, something I want to call it forever and not be a common name. I wont go into them all but a few I will.

Some of them already had their names and I couldn't change the paperwork so I just used a call name relating to the reg. name. One had a call name (Rosie which Im not too fond of) but no reg name so I named her Fire Rose, I was thinking about Irish Rose because her b-day is St Patties day but decided against it. I just took Rose from Rosie and added Fire in front of it because the dogs are "full of fire" and I like fire so it worked out.

Inferno came as Inferno, but his nick name is "The Screamin Demon" because of his whines that turn into freaky screams when he sees another dog. Inferno means/is a firestorm or uncontrollable blaze. He has so much fire and heart since his young puppy days that the name Inferno really fits him so well and besides that he is a red red nose.

Juelz Santana has her name because santana as a name just jumped out. The breeder also wanted name that have to do with bands/music. The sires name was Creed and the dam's name Pantera. I choose Juelz Santana after the rapper and there is also Santana the band(Carlos Santana's band), one of her brothers names is Creedence named after Creedence Clearwater Band and in his fathers honor.

My husband named our husky Jasmine, I am not too sure where he came up with that name. But Aladin is our 4yo daughters favorite movie. Well she is a big disney princess fan, so when we got our first pom we named her Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Her breeder had a downright stupid name for her and I cant even remember it now. Our second pom is FiFi, her previous owner named her that. I dont particularly like it but she already knew her name and I didnt want to confuse her. Although I must add I think its a prissy name and she is a very prissy dog so it fits for her.

When we originally got our Scappy, it took us 2 days and we decided on Bailey. We have a rat terrier also and Scrappy would always go up to Banjo and jump on him, chew on him, try to take whatever he had, etc. After observing this we just made the comment that he was scared of nothing and would pick "scraps" with anyone, any size. The name just stuck after that. :?
