I just read your experience with Maia and wanted to say that I'm very sorry for your loss. I pitty those who will never know of the emotion and bond that can come between a owner/guardian and a pet that is loved.
My only advice is like you wrote,...to always remember her; but don't look for a "reason" that this has happened to you. Sometimes things just happen. At least you were able to share your love and affection to her for as long as you did. I'm sure she felt it and returned it in her own ways!

And perhaps a time will come when you can share your care with another that will also appreciate it and be better for it
