Pets definitely do have an uncanny knack for telling time. Apparently it seems to work whether you come home at a consistent time or not. I did notice that the last few days the dogs have gone nuts around 5pm, which is generally when I feed them dinner. I hate for them to get demanding at a certain time, so I pointedly ignored them and fed them at 6:15 instead. I do try to vary their schedules a bit (within reason) so we don't HAVE to do the same things every day. It seems to work well. On the weekends they sleep in with us just fine. They just lie there in their crates whether they are awake or not until someone gets up. Even then, I can get up to go to the bathroom and go back to bed and besides a little rustling and staring there's not a peep from them.

I didn't do this when Nala was a puppy, though. I kept her mornings very constant for a while. I got up at 5:30am with her every morning so that she could be out of her crate for a couple hours before she had to go back in when we all left for work and school. On the weekends, I also got up at 5:30am with her, but when I would have normally left for work I would crate her and go back to bed. :)

UGH 5:30 that sounds horrible! I am not a morning person, I am glad Luther was not a puppy when I got him!
But that study had the people come home at different times, I do remember that about it, to test that the animals were sensing the person coming home and not a schedule, which I think could be why the birds did so well ion it.

I am not a morning person, either. I was only able to do it because Nala was worth it! I have tried to go back to getting up that early to exercise, but it doesn't work. Apparently nothing but a puppy...
