I used to work for the Blue Cross Animal Adoption Centre here in the UK we would never put a healthy dog down.

They had indoor kennels for the dogs during the night which were heated with there own beds blankets and toys.
During the day they could go out in the pens on there own or they could just lie in there kennels.

There outdoor pens are large enough for 6large dogs to run around in which is great when there is only usually one dog to a kennel and pen sometimes 2.

The dogs were walked 3times per day and all had there special time where each dog had someone there to play with them.

We even had a cattery part which was also large and heated.

So i am all for no kill shelters

Lil, that's a tough question. The puppies are easier to place, but I also think they are more likely to go to a home of idiots who give it back when it's no longer small and cute. Shelters try to weed these people out, but there's only so much you can do. The older animals hopefully have had some happiness and good times in their lives, but the puppies haven't even had a chance. I personally am really fond of the old guys. They deserve to end their lives in a nice place where they are loved.

I hate to think of dogs living for years in cages. I often wonder if it's not better to just euthanize them. But some shelters are actually nice places for the dogs. If they get positive attention from people and chances to play and run outside, is this any worse than some homes they could be in?

I like the idea of places like Best Friends animal sanctuary, where dogs can live out their lives. They provide a good place for dogs that can't otherwise be adopted, and a nice temporary place for those that can.

I also really like foster programs. Those people work hard to socialize and train their fosters so that they are more likely to be successfully adopted. So many dogs are given up because they are acting like dogs! They bark, or pee in the house, or scratch the baby, or growl at the mailman, or pull on leash, or any number of things that ignorant people expect their dog to know is wrong without ever being taught.
